DOLPHINS WRAP BUSY WEEK AT HOME WITH LOSSES TO CHESTNUT HILL

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team played the last of three doubleheaders in four days at the CSI Baseball Complex earlier today as they dropped two games to Chestnut Hill College, 12-5 and 12-2.  The Griffins improved to 6-9 on the year with the two wins while the Dolphins fell to 5-10 on the year.  After the two teams split a doubleheader last year, Chestnut Hill takes a 4-2 lead in the all-time series with the two victories.

GAME 1
After Christian Rice recorded the first out of the game on the mound, three straight Griffins reached base in the first inning.  The led to a Phoenix Bowman 2-RBI single to put Chestnut Hill in front, but the Dolphins would respond.  After Rice escaped further trouble, the Dolphins scored once in each of the next two innings.  AJ Vigliotti doubled home a run in the first and Nicholas Rodriguez singled home a run in the second to tie the game, but the 2-2 score was short-lived.

The Griffins took the lead for good with three runs in the third and added two more in the fourth to go in front 7-2.  That score stood until the sixth when the Griffins scored five times on just two base-hits.  Now trailing 12-2, the Dolphins sent five consecutive pinch-hitters to the plate in the seventh, all of whom reached base.  With three runs already in, a walk loaded the bases with nobody out.  However, the CSI rally would come to an abrupt end here as the next three batters were retired to end the game.

GAME 2
The Dolphins once again fell behind early in game two as the Griffins loaded the bases with one run already home and just one out in the first inning.  As they did in game one, the Dolphins were able to limit the damage, this time with a double play grounder to end the inning.  CSI would then get a runner to third with nobody out in their half of the first, but the Dolphins would fail to score.  As they did in the first, the Griffins would score a single run without the benefit of a hit in the second.

Trailing 2-0, a Thomas Marten leadoff double followed by a balk set up the Dolphins to score for the first time.  Marten came home on a ground ball to make it 2-1, but this would be the last time that the Dolphins would score until the seventh.  Leading 2-1, Chestnut Hill would break the game open with five runs in the fourth.  The Griffins then put the game out of reach with five more runs in the seventh as they went on to win 12-2.

Bryan Birkhead had two hits for CSI in game on and Marten had two of the three CSI hits in game two.  Despite losing 12-5 in game one, the Dolphins outhit the Griffins 11-9 in the loss.  In game two, CSI pitching issued 15 walks and did not allow the first Griffins hit until the fourth inning.

Next time the Dolphins take the field, it will be for their conference opener.  They open a four-game weekend series with the Mercy University Mavericks on Friday in Dobbs Ferry.
