DOLPHINS DROP TWO GAMES AGAINST MERCY IN CONFERENCE HOME OPENER

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opened conference play earlier today at home against Mercy University as the Dolphins suffered a pair of tough losses to the Mavericks, 8-4 and 11-0.  CSI begins conference play with a record of 0-2 and falls to 5-12 on the season.  The Mavericks are now 11-11 on the year and 2-0 in conference play.

GAME 1
The Mavericks led 3-0 early in game one following RBI hits by John Nisco and Kyle Engmaan in the second inning.  Nicholas Rodriguez then got CSI on the board with an RBI hit in the home second, but the Mavericks answered back with a run in the fourth.  Now trailing 4-1 Michael Palermo drove in a run with a fourth-inning RBI single, and CSI pulled to within on an RBI groundout soon after.  With their lead trimmed to one, the Mavericks would seize control the rest of the way scoring four unanswered runs.  Two in the seventh and two in eighth would extend the Mercy lead to five before the Dolphins scored again.  It was a passed ball in the ninth that plated the fourth Dolphins run, but this is all they would get as they fell, 8-4.

GAME 2
The Mavericks took the lead in the second inning of game two and never looked back as Mercy went in front for good with three runs in the second.  The lead would grow in each of the next four innings as the Mavericks scored at least once in every inning from the second through the sixth.  With Mercy leading 11-0, neither team would score in the final inning as the Dolphins were held to just five hits in an 11-0 loss.

When the Dolphins look to bounce back on Sunday, they will be taking the field in Dobbs Ferry for another doubleheader against the Mavericks.  First pitch is scheduled for noon as the two sides will play a pair of nine-inning games to conclude the season series.
