BASEBALL SURRENDERS LEAD LATE IN LOSS TO CALDWELL, 8-7

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team played their final game of the season at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park earlier today and saw a late lead get away in a loss to Caldwell University, 8-7.  The Dolphins end the day 4-5, and the Cougars, who faced the Dolphins one week ago in their season-opener, improve to 1-1 with their first win of the season.  Caldwell now leads the all-time series 6-4.

The Cougars took the lead in the second inning, but they would go on to leave the bases loaded and were forced to settle for just one run.  The Dolphins would answer in the next inning helped along by five walks.  It took just one base hit in the inning for CSI to bring home four runs culminating with a 2-RBI single by Bryan Birkhead.  Leading 4-1, the Dolphins added three more in the fourth when an error brought home the fifth CSI run and a Birkhead two-run homer plated two more.  The 7-1 Dolphins lead stood until the sixth when the Cougars scored twice, but Caldwell was able to do major damage in the eighth.

Trailing by four, the Cougars opened the eighth inning by drawing a walk.   A ground out, single, and a second ground out followed, leaving two on base with two out in the inning.  Another single brought home the fourth Caldwell run, and a wild pitch combined with a throwing error trimmed the CSI lead down to one.  A two-out RBI-double tied the score at 7-7 before the Dolphins bullpen finally escaped the inning.  Michael Palermo then led off the home eighth for the Dolphins with a single and was sacrificed to second, but CSI failed to score.  In the next inning, Zach Saunders led off with a go-ahead home run that would go down as the game winner in an 8-7 Cougars victory.

Ryan Kehoe went 6 innings starting for the Dolphins allowing 3 runs on 3 hits.  Brandon Scalisi went 5 innings in relief for the Cougars to earn the win as he allowed just two hits out of the Caldwell bullpen.  Palermo and Birkhead combined for all 5 CSI hits and Birkhead finished with 4 RBI.

The Dolphins take the field for their next game on Wednesday when they host Godley-Beacom at the CSI Baseball Complex.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
