BASEBALL OPENS SERIES AGAINST QUEENS WITH HIGH-SCORING DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

Flushing, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team opened their four-game series against Queens College with a split of a high-scoring doubleheader on Saturday.  In game one, the Dolphins held on in the late innings to win 9-7.  In game two, the Dolphins came from behind to tie the game late, but the Knights scored the go-ahead run in the sixth to win 11-10.  The Dolphins end the day 12-17 on the season and 7-7 in conference play.  The Knights are now 18-14 on the year and 8-6 in conference play.

GAME 1
Each team scored twice in the first inning and twice in the third inning of game one leaving the score tied at 4-4 one-third of the way through.  The Dolphins finally gained an advantage in the fourth scoring two more runs as the Knights scored just once.  Leading 6-5, CSI went ahead by three in the fifth on RBI hits by AJ Vigliotti and Owen Weber.  The 8-5 score would stand until the eighth when Chris Polemeni singled home a run to make it 9-5.  Queens would get one run closer on a bases loaded walk in the eighth, and the Knights would single home another run in the ninth.  Queens would ultimately bring the tying run to the plate down to their final out, but Aidan Kielty closed the door and secured a 9-7 Dolphins win.

GAME 2
RBI hits by Vincent Weigele and Weber gave the Dolphins the early lead in game two, but the Knights got started at the plate with a six-spot in the home first inning.  Trailing 6-2, the Dolphins scored three times in the second.  The first two came home on a 2-RBI hit by Vigliotti, and the third later scored on another RBI hit by Polemeni.  Now leading by just one, the Knights answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 8-5.  Queens would add another run in the third to go ahead 9-5, but the Dolphins would come storming back in the fifth.  A Knights error allowed a run to score making it 9-6, and the stage was set for what looked to be the biggest at-bat of the game.  With the bases loaded trailing by three, Polemeni put the Dolphins in front with a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season.  Queens would respond with a game-tying Marc Cisco home run in the next half-inning, and the Knights would score the go-ahead run on an RBI-double by Michael Vilardi in the sixth.  This put Queens ahead for good, and the Knights salvaged the doubleheader split with an 11-10 win.

Bryan Birkhead and Vigliotti each had three hits in game one and Vigliotti finished the game with five RBI.  Polemeni also drove in five runs in game two, and Michael Palermo had three hits in the loss.

The Dolphins complete their four-game series with the Knights tomorrow at the CSI Baseball Complex.  The two teams will play two nine inning games to end the series beginning on Sunday at noon.
