BASEBALL DROPS SEASON SERIES AGAINST QUEENS WITH TWO HOME LOSSES

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team wrapped up their season series with the Queens College Knights dropping two games at home earlier today.  In game one, the Dolphins battled back from a four-run deficit to tie the score, but Queens would retake the lead for good in the middle innings of an 11-7 win.  In game two, the Dolphins fell behind by five before cutting the lead to two, 6-4.  However, the Knights erupted for 12 runs after that and went on to win 18-6.  The Dolphins end the day 12-19 on the year and 7-9 against the ECC.  The Knights are now 20-14 on the season and 8-6 in conference play.

GAME 1
CSI starter Christian Rice was forced to work very hard during the first two innings as the Knights scored six runs behind six hits and five walks.  Despite a tough start to the game, Rice did get run support in each of those innings.  In the first, AJ Vigliotti, who recorded his 100th career hit in yesterday's doubleheader, put CSI on the board with a two-run homer.  In the second, Michael Kehoe delivered a second two-run homer to bring the Dolphins within two.  Trailing 6-4, the Dolphins would get even in the third behind an RBI hit from Vincent Weigele and RBI ground ball by Nicholas Rodriguez.  Tied at 6-6, Queens opened the fourth with consecutive doubles to go in front 7-6, and two batters later, the third Queens hit of the inning put the Knights ahead by two.

Once again trailing, the Dolphins got one run back in the fifth on Weigele's second RBI hit of the game.  With runners on the corners, one out, and with a chance to tie the game, Rodriguez looked to surprise Queens on a bunt attempt. However, the ball went right back to the mound and the Knights turned the 1-6-3 double-played to end the CSI threat.  Neither team would score again until the seventh when the Knights scored an unearned run on a Joey Patane single.  Ahead 9-7, the Knights would add some insurance in the ninth as well scoring twice to go ahead by four.  CSI would get one base runner in their half of the final inning, but this was all they would get as they fell 11-7.

GAME 2
Game two also saw the Dolphins struggle to record outs early as Queens scored twice in the first inning.  Once again, the Dolphins answered right back in their first turn at the plate, this time scoring once on an RBI single by Chris Polemeni.  With one on and two outs in the road third, a run-saving diving catch by Polemeni kept the score 2-1, but the Knights finally broke through again in the fourth with four more runs.  CSI would respond in the fifth when Vigliotti delivered his second two-run homer of the day to make it 6-3.  In the sixth, the Dolphins drew one run closer on a Nick Campisi RBI single, but CSI would strand the bases loaded in the frame.  From here, the Knights completely seized control of the game with seven runs in the seventh.  The Dolphins would get two back in the bottom half of the inning, but Queens put the game out of reach with five more in the ninth inning of an 18-6 victory.

With a home run in each game of the doubleheader, Vigliotti has now homered in three of the last four games and has five on the season.  Bryan Birkhead was the lone Dolphin with three hits in game one and Nick Campisi was the only Dolphins with three hits in game two.  Dennis Kelly was tremendous in relief during game one as well allowing one unearned run on two hits in 4.1 innings.  CSI pitching issued 18 walks on the day, and the Dolphins lost game one despite holding an 11-10 advantage in hits with two home runs.

The Dolphins will play conference doubleheaders each of the next two weekends before being left with a bye during the final weekend of ECC Baseball.  First up next weekend, the Dolphins will travel to Buffalo for four games against D'Youville University.  That series is scheduled to begin on Friday.
