SEVENTH INNING LEAD GETS AWAY FROM DOLPHINS IN SERIES OPENER LOSS TO D'YOUVILLE

Niagara Falls, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team suffered a tough loss earlier today as the Saints of D'Youville University erased an eight-run deficit in the seventh inning to defeat the Dolphins, 16-11.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 12-20 on the season and 7-10 against the ECC.  The Saints are now 19-17 on the year and 8-5 in conference play.

The Dolphins opened the scoring early as CSI plated an unearned run on an RBI single by Bryan Birkhead in the first inning.  D'Youville would then threaten in their half of the first, but the Saints would strand the bases loaded.  The Dolphins went down in order in the second, and the Saints would go on to tie the score on a solo home run by Jon Simpson.  With the score even at 1-1, the Dolphins erupted for five runs on six hits in the fourth.  Nicholas Rodriguez and Birkhead each delivered 2-RBI hits as the Dolphins went in front by five.  Simpson homered again in the fourth to make it a 6-2 game, but the Dolphins would respond by scoring the next four runs.  Already leading by four in the sixth, the Dolphins doubled their lead behind a RBI single from AJ Vigliotti and a three-run homer from Chris Polemeni.

The score remained 10-2 entering the home seventh which is when CSI turned to the bullpen in relief of starter Ryan Kehoe.  Before an out was recorded in the inning, the Saints pulled to within five on back-to-back singles and a Jeremy Glinkski three-run homer.  The Dolphins would retire two of the next three batters leaving a runner on first with two outs, but from here the inning would spiral out of control.  The next eleven Saints would all reach base as D'Youville went on to score 14 times in the inning on 11 hits.  With D'Youville now leading for the first time 16-10, the only run scored the rest of the way belonged to CSI in the ninth inning.  However, this wasn't nearly enough to threaten the Saints lead and D'Youville took the series-opener by a final score of 16-11.

Both Birkhead and Polemeni had multiple hits with three RBI in the game and Christopher Reilly came in off the CSI bench and went 3-4.  Kehoe allowed just the two runs on six hits giving the Dolphins a very strong start.  The rest of the way, the Dolphins allowed 14 runs on 12 hits.

Needing to bounce back quickly in order to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Dolphins will play two more against the Saints tomorrow.  First pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
