SOFTBALL FALLS ONE WIN SHY OF PLAYOFFS IN SENIOR DAY REGULAR SEASON FINALE

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team fell one win short of a berth in the ECC playoffs today as they split their doubleheader against Mercy University.  In game one, the Dolphins scored the first five runs of the game in the first two innings and cruised to a 5-1 victory.  In game two, the Mavericks scored the only four runs of the game as Alexi Benson tossed a complete game shutout to send Mercy to the playoffs.  CSI ends the season with a record of 15-31 and 7-13 in conference play.  The Mavericks finish 14-26 overall and 8-12 in conference play.

GAME 1
The Dolphins took the lead in the first inning of game one behind a three-run six-hit effort in their first turn at bat.  Anissa Acosta opened the scoring with a solo home run, but the Dolphins would go on to string together four straight two out hits later in the inning to go in front by three.  The Dolphins would score twice more on three hits in the fourth, and CSI had already given starter Kennedie Ruth more than enough run support.  Staked to a 5-0 lead, Ruth did not allow a run until the sixth when the Mavericks scored just once.  However, Mercy would never bring the tying run to the plate beyond the second inning and the Dolphins went on to win by a final score of 5-1.

GAME 2
Game two began in a pitcher's duel with neither team scoring until the fourth inning.  Breaking the scoreless tie was Samantha Franck who put Mercy in front for good with a solo home run.  After taking the lead in the fourth, the Mavericks would put up three more in the fifth.  Two hits and two wild pitches would help the Mavericks plate three against Ruth who came on in relief of Alexandra Frenza to start the inning.  Trailing 4-0 entering the home fifth, the Dolphins generated their best scoring chance of the game with a hit batter, single, and Mavericks error.  This loaded the bases with two outs in the inning bringing Olivia Wanser to the plate as the tying run.  However, a sharply hit ground ball would be knocked down in the circle by Benson to set up the inning-ending putout.  CSI would strand one runner following one hit in the sixth and would strand a pair following two hits in the seventh as their season came to an end with a 4-0 loss.

Acosta was one of four Dolphins with two hits in game one as she homered in each of her first two at bats.  Aliveah Warner, Bridget Motley and Mariah Carcano each had two hits as well in an eleven-hit effort for the Dolphins.  In the circle, Alexi Benson allowed two runs in her first inning of work for Mercy in game one.  From there, she shut the Dolphins out for twelve consecutive innings.  Despite losing 4-0, the Dolphins outhit the Mavericks 7-6 in game two, but CSI would leave seven on base in the defeat.

Ahead of game one, the Dolphins recognized seniors Kelsey Strayer, Victoria Whalen, and Elizabeth Moore, all of whom played in their final home game today.  The Dolphins will once again return all of their everyday starters for the 2025 season still hoping to make the postseason for the first time as a Division II program.
