BASEBALL DROPS CONFERENCE SERIES TO STAC AS SPARTANS SWEEP SUNDAY DOUBLEHEADER

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Baseball Team completed a four-game series with Saint Thomas Aquinas College earlier today at the CSI Baseball Complex with a pair of losses to their conference rival.  In game one, the Dolphins led 9-7 entering the ninth inning, but the Spartans rallied for five runs to win 12-9.  In game two, the Dolphins led by a run entering the seventh inning, but the Spartans went on to score five unanswered runs in a 6-2 victory.  The Dolphins end the day 11-16 on the season and 6-6 in conference play with the two losses.  The Spartans are now 13-16 on the year and 4-3 in conference play.

GAME 1
The Spartans slowly built a sizable lead beginning in the first inning of game one as they scored three times in the first inning.  That 3-0 lead was quickly cut to two on an RBI double b AJ Vigliotti, but the Spartans responded with three more runs in the third to go ahead 6-1.  Already leading by five, the Spartans scored again in the fourth to go ahead by six.  However, this is when the CSI comeback would get started.  The Dolphins would score their second and third runs in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly.  A hit batter then brought home the fourth Dolphins run in the sixth before Thomas Marten doubled home two more to make it a one-run game.  Trailing by just one, a Spartans throwing error allowed both the tying and go-ahead runs to score, and the Dolphins carried a 9-8 lead into the ninth inning.  Down to their final three outs, the Spartans rallied for five runs in the inning, and they would go on to win by a final score of 12-9.

GAME 2
Game two began locked in a pitcher's duel for the first three innings before STAC opened the scoring with a run in the fourth.  Behind 1-0, Bryan Birkhead tied the game for the Dolphins with an RBI single in the fifth.  Chris Polemeni then gave the Dolphins the lead with a sacrifice fly in the same inning, and the Dolphins took a 2-1 lead into the seventh.  It was in this inning that the Spartans put together another big rally to come from behind and take the lead.  This time, the visitors scored four to go in front 5-2.  STAC would then add another insurance run in the eighth as they went on to secure the series win with a 6-2 victory.

Michael Kehoe and Vincent Weigele each had two hits in game one, and Weigele's second hit was his first home run of the season.  Vigliotti, Marten and Weigele each drove home two runs in the early game as well.  After Christian Rice was relieved in the third inning of game one, the Dolphins bullpen allowed just one run in the next 5.1 innings. However, the bullpen was charged with five runs in the ninth.  In game two, Polemeni, Jaden Waterman, and Nicholas Rodriguez all had two hits.  Starter Francesco Bonvini pitched into the seventh allowing just three hits, but he also issued six walks and hit two batters.

The Dolphins will begin another four-game conference series when they return to action on Friday against Queens College.  That game will open the series at the CSI Baseball Complex on Friday at 3:30 PM.
