Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS EXTEND CONFERENCE WIN STREAK TO FOUR WITH VICTORY OVER SPARTANS, 57-44

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team extended their conference win streak to four games earlier today as they defeated the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College, 57-44.  After falling behind early, the Dolphins came storming back late in the second quarter and early in the third.  A huge run to open the third put CSI in front by as many as 16, and that lead would not fall below seven on their way to their fourth conference win.  With the victory, the Dolphins improve to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play.  The Spartans end the day 3-12 on the season and 1-4 against the ECC.  The CSI win is also the first against the Spartans as a Division II program and their first over STAC since more than 40 years ago.

The Dolphins fell behind by as many as four in the opening quarter, but the returning Dana Phelan made her presence felt with a buzzer-beater to close out the opening quarter.  Previously trailing 11-10, the Phelan three put the Dolphins ahead 13-11 after the first ten minutes.  After falling behind to end the first, the Spartans responded with a 7-0 run to begin the second quarter.  Now trailing by five, the Dolphins quickly got even at 20-20 before closing the half on an 11-6 run.  Once again, it was a Dolphins buzzer-beater to close out the quarter as Amber Abusbeih hit a circus shot to close the half with CSI leading 31-26.

It was during the third quarter that the Dolphins broke the game open with an 11-0 run to begin the second half.  The run was highlighted by a trio of CSI three-pointers from Madison Haggett, Alexa Quirolo, and Abusbeih as the Dolphins went ahead by 14.  The Spartans offense struggled for much of the period, and CSI allowed just six points in the quarter as they took a 45-32 lead into the fourth.  It took the Dolphins over four minutes to score their first points in the fourth, but the CSI defense managed to contain the Spartans offense and protect the lead.  STAC would score just twelve in the fourth, and the Dolphins would not allow their lead to fall below seven on their way to a 57-44 victory.

Quirolo led the Dolphins in scoring with 15 points and Jenalyse Alarcon recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Defensively, the Dolphins held the Spartans to 35% shooting and just 20% from beyond the arc.  STAC was also limited to just 18 points in the second half as the Dolphins never trailed in the second half.

The Dolphins will continue conference play on the road when they visit Roberts Wesleyan University on Wednesday night at 5:00 PM.
