Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL TO ROBERTS WESLEYAN ON GAME-WINNING THREE IN FINAL SECONDS, 93-90

Rochester, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team saw a second-half lead get away against Roberts Wesleyan earlier tonight as a game-winning three in the closing seconds handed the Dolphins a 93-90 defeat.  The Dolphins led by as many as 13 in the second half, but a Redhawks comeback culminated with a go-ahead three leaving just five seconds remaining.  The Dolphins failed to get a shot off following a scramble for a loose ball and suffered their second straight loss.  CSI ends the night 7-11 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.  The Redhawks are now 6-9 overall and 3-2 against the ECC.

The two teams traded the lead throughout the first six minutes of the game, but Roberts gained some separation as the game approached the midway point of the first half.  The Redhawks went in front by as many as five, but the Dolphins quickly erased that deficit behind an 8-0 run.  Now leading by three, CSI would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the half, and CSI would into the break leading, 47-41.

The CSI lead grew past ten for the first time less than three minutes into the second half, and the Dolphins would go on to lead by as many as thirteen with just over sixteen minutes remaining.  It was here that the Redhawks comeback began, and the CSI was cut to one just over three minutes later.  The Dolphins would quickly push their advantage back to five, and an Aaron Goldstein three would extend that lead to six with ten minutes remaining.  However, Roberts finally got even for the first time in the half with 6:31 to go, and the Redhawks briefly took a one-point lead with 5:34 remaining.

The Dolphins would go ahead by five soon after, but once again, the Redhawks would get even with 1:42 left.  Following a CSI offensive foul, Roberts took the lead by two.  That lead then grew to four from the line with just 32 seconds on the clock.  A JJ Chestnut basket brought the Dolphins to within two with 24 seconds left, and the Dolphins would get even just moments later.  A steal by Sean Hargrave set up a game-tying score by the redshirt sophomore with 19 seconds on the clock, but the Redhawks would go in front for good with on their final possession.  With just five seconds left, Keonjay Carter knocked down the game-winning three, and the Dolphins would not be able to get another shot off as they fell, 93-90.

Messiah Mallory recorded a double-double for the Dolphins with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  He was tied for the team lead in scoring with Aaron Goldstein who finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds.  Blake Wilson scored 15, and both Chris Clancy and Mitchell Wiggan finished with 10.  As a team, the Dolphins shot nearly 52% from the field and 39% from beyond the arc.  Similarly Roberts shot 50% from the field and over 41% from downtown.  Three Redhawks scored at least 18 in the win including Carter, Malik Brooks, and Jermaine Taggart II.

The Dolphins will next be in action on their home floor when they host Molloy University on Wednesday night.  Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
