Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MALLORY SCORES CAREER-HIGH 37 AS DOLPHINS HOLD OFF LIONS, 87-77

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team came from behind in the second half of their game against Molloy University earlier tonight and scored their fourth conference win of the season, 87-77.  The Dolphins improve to 8-11 with the victory and move to 4-3 in conference play.  The Lions end the night 6-12 on the year and 2-5 against the ECC.  Leading the way for the Dolphins was senior Messiah Mallory who scored a career-high 37 points and blocked five more shots.  The multi-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and conference Preseason Player of the Year blocked five or more shots for the third time in four games and scored more than 30 points for the first time this season.

The two teams traded the lead for much of the first half as Mallory and Rob Matos were the driving force behind each team's offense.  Neither team would lead by more than a single possession until the final five minutes of the half when the Dolphins went in front by four.  That lead grew to five on a Chris Clancy three, but the Lions quickly got even.  With just seconds to go until halftime, JJ Chestnut put the Dolphins ahead by two entering the break with a floater from in close.  This sent the game into halftime with the Dolphins ahead, 39-37.

Following the break, Molloy began to slowly build their lead and would go in front by as many as five points, their largest lead of the game.  However, the Dolphins responded with their best stretch of the game, a 16-4 run.  Mallory got the run started with a three, the Dolphins capitalized from the free-throw line, and Aaron Goldstein put the Dolphins ahead by seven with another CSI three-pointer.  Molloy would trim the lead to three one final time, but this was as close as they would get the rest of the way.  The Dolphins would go ahead by as many as eleven, and the Lions would not get any closer than seven in the closing minutes as the Dolphins took the ten-point win.

Mallory's career-high 37 points and five blocks marked the standout effort for the Dolphins.  However, both Chestnut and Clancy scored 10 points, and CSI shot 23-25 from the line as a team.  The Dolphins were also efficient from the field shooting 41% overall and 42% from beyond the arc.  Molloy shot a similar percentage from the field and was led in scoring by Matos with 30 points.  He was one of four Lions to finish with double-figures in the loss.

The Dolphins will next be in action against Queens on the road this Saturday at 3:00 PM.
