Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS FALL SHORT IN CLOSING MINUTES OF FIRST-EVER MATCHUP WITH VIRGINIA UNION, 74-68

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team dropped their first-ever matchup with the Panthers of Virginia Union University earlier tonight, 74-68.  After erasing a ten-point halftime deficit, the Dolphins briefly took the lead in the second half.  However, the Panthers took the lead back quickly, and Virginia Union remained in front the rest of the way to win, 74-68.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 5-9 on the season and the win improves the Panthers to 7-7.

The Dolphins jumped out to an early lead in the first half behind a good start shooting from the outside.  After Chris Clancy emphatically made his return to the lineup with an early three, Aaron Goldstein connected on consecutive threes to extend the CSI lead to five.  From here, the Panthers responded with a 13-0 run to go in front by eight, a lead that would grow as large as thirteen before halftime.  In the closing seconds before the break, Goldstein brought the Dolphins to within ten on his fourth three of the half.  This sent the game to the intermission with the Panthers leading, 39-29.

The Dolphins quickly put a dent in the Panthers lead coming out of the locker room and Clancy pulled the Dolphins to within five with another three just four minutes into the second half.  Two minutes later, another three by Goldstein cut the Virginia Union lead to four, and three minutes after that, CSI took the lead on a three by Justin Zieris.  CSI fell behind by one moments later, but Goldstein answered with yet another Dolphins three to put CSI ahead by two.  The Dolphins would lead for the final time with 7:11 remaining and would not be able to get any closer than two the rest of the way.  Trailing by just three, a one-for-two trip to the line by Asa Kone made it a two-point game.  On the next Virginia Union possession, Travis Vaughn delivered the dagger on a mid-range pull-up to help his team secure a six-point win on the road.

Goldstein led the Dolphins with 23 points followed by Zieris with 12 and Clancy with 11.  DH Mitchell led Virginia Union with 16 and was one of five Panthers to register double-digit scoring.  The Dolphins recovered from poor shooting in the first half to finish the game shooting just shy of 40% from the field and 37% from beyond the arc.  The Panthers shot 50% in the game and 6-13 from beyond the arc.  Of CSI's 58 shot attempts, 41 came from beyond the arc.  The Dolphins made 15 of those to shoot 37% from deep in the game.

The Dolphins return to action on Saturday when they visit Wilmington University for the last of four straight non-conference games.
