Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN'S BASKETBALL COMES UP JUST SHORT IN CLOSING MINUTES AGAINST QUEENS, 65-61

Flushing, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team came up just short in the closing minutes of their conference matchup with Queens College earlier today as the Knights defeated the Dolphins, 65-61.  The loss drops the Dolphins to 8-12 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.  Queens also ends the day with an identical 8-12 mark on the year and 4-4 against the ECC.  The Knights victory snaps a three-game CSI winning streak against Queens dating back to the 2022-2023 season.

The Dolphins turned early defensive pressure into points as they forced Queens into a series of early turnovers.  This allowed the Dolphins to jump ahead 7-1 in the opening minutes, but Queens would answer with a run of their own.  After trailing by six, the Knights scored eleven unanswered points to go in front by five.  The Queens run came to an end on a Joey Poulin three, but the Knights responded with an 8-2 run to go ahead by eight.  Once again, the Queens run was ended with a Dolphins three, this time by Aaron Goldstein.  The Dolphins then fell behind by nine, but Poulin and Goldstein combined to score eight straight points.  The Dolphins briefly took the lead in the closing seconds of the first half, but a Queens buzzer-beater sent the game to halftime with the Knights leading by one.

The Dolphins briefly took the only lead once again in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Knights went on yet another scoring run. This time, Queens went ahead by as many as nine with ten minutes remaining in the game.  Trailing 48-39, the Dolphins quickly made it a one-possession game following back-to-back threes by Goldstein and Chris Clancy.  Clancy would then connect on another big three five minutes later to bring the Dolphins within two.  Finally, Goldstein got the Dolphins even from the free throw line with two minutes remaining, but the Knights immediately went back in front by three.  Justin Zieris responded with another clutch CSI three to tie the score at 57-57, but Shemar Chester answered right back with a three for Queens.  Following a stop at the defensive end, the Knights closed out the win from the line as a Dolphins comeback fell just short in the final seconds.

Goldstein led the Dolphins with 17 points and Messiah Mallory finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds.  Zieris was the only other Dolphin in double-figures with 11 as CSI shot just 30% as a team in the loss.  Queens also struggled from the field shooting just 34%, but four Knights scored at least ten points in the victory.

The Dolphins will next be in action against Daemen on the road Friday night at 7:30 PM.  This will be the first of two games that the Dolphins will play in Buffalo next weekend with the second coming against D'Youville on Sunday.
