WOMEN'S BASKETBALL MAKES FIRST-EVER APPEARANCE IN EAST REGION TOP 10 RANKINGS

1/27/2025 3:00:00 PM

The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team made their first-ever appearance in the D2CSC East Region rankings today placing tenth in the latest poll.  The ranking comes on the heels of another 2-0 week in conference play which has seen the Dolphins solidify their position as a top two seed in the East Coast Conference standings.  The team has a big weekend looming as they will face Daemen University on Friday and D'Youville University on Sunday in Buffalo.  The Wildcats handed the Dolphins their only loss in conference play earlier this season at The Tank, 54-48.  Since that matchup with the Wildcats in early-December, the Dolphins have won seven straight conference games.  Daemen also appears in the latest regional rankings taking the seventh spot in the top ten.

The Dolphins defeated Molloy and Queens this week to break into the D2CSC East Region top 10

Entering the week, the Dolphins were just outside of the regional top ten having received two votes in last week's poll.  In the latest poll, they moved into the tenth spot in the region, and they can certainly expect to move up further with another 2-0 performance this week.  Currently, the Dolphins and Wildcats are the two representatives of the ECC in the regional top ten.  A Dolphins win on Friday night would tie the two teams atop the ECC standings, and both teams are poised to earn a first-round postseason bye at the midway point of the conference season.

The Dolphins team that has made this first-time achievement possible features a mix of returners and newcomers, all of whom have contributed to a roster that is ten players deep.  Leading the way is ECC Player of the Year candidate Jenalyse Alarcon who continues to deliver huge performances at both ends of the floor.  Junior Dana Phelan has been the team's best scorer from the outside and both Kyra Rose and Noemia Massingue continue to provide solid two-way efforts on the interior.  Returning reserves Madison Haggett, Dorothy Wiese, and Oyinkansola Oke have all stepped up in increased roles this season with Haggett also earning six starts.  Finally, newcomers Amber Abusbeih and Alexa Quirolo have become fixtures in the starting lineup while transfer Mia Fuller has served as the first point guard off the bench.
