Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SECOND-HALF SCORING SURGE NOT ENOUGH TO GET DOLPHINS PAST COUGARS, 77-69

Caldwell, NJ - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team scored 48 points in the second half of their game against Caldwell University earlier today, but that was not enough to overcome a slow start in a 77-69 loss to the Cougars.  The Dolphins are now 8-6 on the season following the defeat.  The Cougars improve to 7-5 with the win and take a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series.

The Dolphins led by as many as four in the opening minutes, but the Cougars quickly recovered to tie the score at 10-10 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter.  Caldwell would eventually take the lead by five behind a 7-0 run, and they would end the period leading by six.  The Cougars went ahead by double digits for the first time with 5:42 to go before halftime and held the Dolphins without a basket for over four minutes as the half drew to a close.  This allowed the Cougars to build an eighteen-point lead entering the break, and the Dolphins were left with a steep hill to climb in the last two quarters.

The Dolphins offense came to life out of the locker room as they opened the second half of an 8-1 run.  Alexa Quirolo and Dana Phelan got things started with a pair of threes, and Phelan added two more in the paint to cut the Caldwell lead to eleven.  Two minutes later, Quirolo and Phelan once again hit consecutive threes to trim the lead to eight.  However, the Caldwell lead would gradually grow all the way back to eighteen points with less than nine minutes to play.  Trailing by thirteen with under four minutes to go, the Dolphins erupted for a quick 9-0 run across just 43 seconds.  Now leading by just four, the Cougars did not allow CSI to get any closer the rest of the way, and Caldwell held on for the 77-69 victory.

Jenalyse Alarcon led the Dolphins with 19 points with most her damage from the free-throw line where she was 9-11.  Quirolo and Phelan each had 16 and combined to connect on six three-pointers.  Lucy Coogan and Jah'Nel Lewis scored 27 and 22 respectively for the Cougars.  Coogan also added 10 rebounds to record a double-double, and helped lead Caldwell to over 55% shooting from the field.

The Dolphins will resume conference play when they are back in action on Wednesday night against Mercy University.
