Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

LATE QUIROLO JUMPER HELPS DOLPHINS OUTLAST MAVERICKS FOR THIRD CONFERENCE WIN, 60-58

Dobbs Ferry, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team earned their third conference win of the season earlier tonight as they outlasted the Mercy University Mavericks in the closing minutes of a 60-58 victory.  Trailing by one with under 30 seconds remaining, the Dolphins found Alexa Quirolo open for two in the right corner.  The jumper put CSI ahead by one, and the Dolphins would force a turnover on the ensuing Mavericks possession to close out the win.  With their third win in conference play, the Dolphins improve to 9-6 overall and 3-1 against the ECC.  Mercy falls to 8-6 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.

The night got off to a shaky start for the Dolphins as Mercy opened the game by scoring the first six points.  However, the Dolphins got on the board on a three by Madison Haggett, and CSI would go on to generate a go-ahead 7-0 run.  The Dolphins would lead by as many as five in the quarter and would enter the second ahead, 15-12.  After trailing by as many as six, an 11-0 Mavericks run gave Mercy the lead back with five minutes to go before halftime.  Haggett finally ended the CSI scoring drought with another three to cut the Mercy lead to two, and CSI would go back in front from the free throw line in the final seconds of the half.

After CSI took a one-point lead into the locker room, the two teams traded the lead for much of the third quarter.  Haggett brought the period to a close on another three, this time to put the Dolphins in front by four, 43-39.  CSI did not relinquish the lead back to Mercy until the final four minutes when Jaclyn Stanavich put Mercy in front by six with back-to-back threes.  The Dolphins went back in front behind a 7-0 run, but Mercy would take the lead from the line with 28 seconds to play.  The Dolphins would proceed to hold the ball until the final seconds of the game when Quirolo got free in the corner for the go-ahead jumper.  CSI then forced a Mercy turnover, and Jenalyse Alarcon, who led the Dolphins in scoring with 17, closed out the win from the line.

Alarcon finished one rebound shy of a double-double as she grabbed 9 boards to go along with her 17 points.  Kyra Rose and Amber Abusbeih also finished in double-figures with 11 points each.  Haggett scored 9 points on 3-6 from beyond the arc and Stanavich was tied for the Mercy lead in scoring with 15 points.  Grace Lesko joined Stanavich in scoring 15, but Mercy shot only 32% in the defeat.

The Dolphins will continue conference play at home this weekend when they host the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday at The Tank.
