DOLPHINS COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT AT THE BUZZER AGAINST ST. MICHAEL'S

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island women's basketball team wrapped up the 2025 East Region Conference Challenge on their home floor this afternoon as they faced Saint Michael's College in their second outing of the season.

The Dolphins opened the game with a 6-0 run, but the Purple Knights ended the first period on a 15-7 run.  As turnovers piled up for both teams, Saint Michael's was able to build a halftime lead of 14 points behind five first-half three-pointers.  Through 20 minutes, the two sides combined for 32 turnovers, and CSI was held without a single three in the first half.

After trailing by as many as 18 late in the second quarter, the Dolphins pulled to within single-digits on a pair of Dana Phelan free throws.  However, the Purple Knights would end the quarter leading by 12, just two points shy of their advantage at halftime.

Two defensive stops and a pair of quick baskets by Kyra Rose and Dana Phelan pulled the Dolphins to within eight early in the fourth.  A single Saint Michael's score was then followed by a 7-0 Dolphins run to cut the deficit to one possession, 51-48.  Less than two minutes later, Rose would pull the Dolphins to within one, but CSI would never gain the lead.

Phelan would cut the lead to one from the free throw line with one minute remaining, but the Dolphins found themselves down five with seventeen seconds to play.  A deep three by Phelan would bring the Dolphins back to within two, and a missed free throw kept the door open for the Dolphins with no timeouts and eleven seconds remaining.  Once again, the Dolphins got the ball to Phelan in the closing seconds, but a long three from well beyond the top of the arc came up short at the buzzer.

Phelan led all scorers with 20 points, and Rose finished with 13.  Arielle Barnes also scored in double-figures with 11 and was one rebound shy of a double-double.  The Dolphins forced 24 Purple Knights turnovers, but they committed 27 of their own.  Rose, Shonyae Edmonds and Racky Kane also battled foul trouble as each finished with four.

The Dolphins return to action on Wednesday when they visit Goldey-Beacom College at 6:00 p.m.
