PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The College of Staten Island women's basketball team closed out the first half of its season Saturday afternoon in Pleasantville, NY, with a road victory over Pace University.
With the win, the Dolphins improved to 5-7 overall and extended their winning streak to three games heading into the new year.
The opening quarter was tightly contested, as CSI trailed the Setters 12-10 after one. After falling behind 11-4 in the first six minutes, the Dolphins found their rhythm behind contributions from Racky Kane, Kyra Rose, and Jasanii Francis-Torres to stay within striking distance.
The Dolphins took control in the second quarter, outscoring Pace 22-13 to carry a 32-25 advantage into halftime. Shonyae Edmonds opened the frame with a basket in the paint to tie the game at 12 apiece. Dana Phelan connected on a pair of three-pointers, while Kane added points at the free-throw line to give CSI a 19-14 edge. After Pace briefly regained the lead, Kane knocked down her first triple of the night to put the Dolphins back in front. CSI shot an efficient 57 percent (4-7) from beyond the arc in the quarter, capped by another Edmonds three to close the half.
CSI continued its strong play in the third, matching its second-quarter output with another 22-point frame while Pace added 18. Phelan stayed hot from long range, draining another three to push the lead to 10, 35-25. Although the Setters cut the deficit to five, Phelan and Rose responded to restore the cushion. Pace pulled within three midway through the period, but Kane and Dorothy Weise answered each run. With just five seconds remaining in the quarter, Arielle Barnes buried a clutch three-pointer to send the Dolphins into the final stanza with a 54-43 lead.
Barnes' late triple gave CSI an 11-point advantage entering the fourth, and the Dolphins held firm down the stretch to secure the 72-65 victory, despite Pace outscoring CSI 22-18 in the final frame.
Kane led all scorers with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 2-3 (67%) from beyond the arc. Rose followed with 14 points and three steals, while Phelan added 13 points on 50 percent (3-6) shooting from three-point range. Edmonds and Barnes each finished with nine points, and Barnes also dished out four assists.
The Dolphins will return to action in the new year on Jan. 2, welcoming Assumption University to the Tank for a non-conference matchup scheduled for 1:00 PM.
