Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS MOVE WITHIN ONE WIN OF PLAYOFF BYE WITH VICTORY OVER MERCY, 63-49

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team moved to within one win of securing a first round bye in the playoffs earlier tonight as they defeated the Mercy University Mavericks, 63–49.  After taking the lead into halftime behind a strong, second quarter, the Dolphins pulled away for good in the third.  The Mavericks never got any closer than eight in the final quarter as they fell to 13–9 on the year and 7–5 in conference play.  The Dolphins further tightened their grip on the number two seed in the ECC and are now 17–8 on the season and 10–2 in conference play.

Mercy led by as many as five in the opening quarter, but four straight points from Noemia Massingue sent the game into the second with the Dolphins trailing by just one.  The CSI scoring run continued early in the second quarter as Jenalyse Alarcon and Madison Haggett combined to score the first four points of the period.  The Dolphins then began to seize control of the game behind their scoring in the paint as Kyra Rose and Alexa Quirlo accounted for eighth straight CSI points at the rim.  Dana Phelan then ended the half with a three to put the Dolphins ahead by seven at the half, 28–21.

The Mavericks pulled to within five just over two minutes into the third-quarter, but this is as close as they would get in the second half.  Rose continued her dominance around the basket and was a frequent visitor to the free-throw line as CSI increased their lead to double figures.  Consecutive threes by Hagget and Phelan ended the quarter and put the Dolphins ahead by thirteen.  Mercy would pull to within eight twice in the fourth, but the Dolphins continued to do major damage from the line as they went on to win, 63–49.

Rose led the Dolphins with 19 points and finished just one rebound shy of a double-double.  Alarcon added 14 points and 8 rebounds, and the CSI defense held Mercy to just 38% shooting.  The CSI victory also evens the all-time series between the Dolphins and Mavericks at 4-4.

The Dolphins can clinch a first round bye in the postseason this weekend against St. Thomas Aquinas College.  They visit the Spartans on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
