WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CLINCHES FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFF BYE WITH HUGE WIN OVER STAC, 76-57

Sparkill, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team punched their ticket to the ECC Championship Semifinal Round earlier today as they defeated the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, 76-57.  After a huge first half saw the Dolphins leading 45-10 at the break, CSI was able to coast to their eleventh conference win of the season.  The Dolphins end the day 18-7 overall and 11-2 in conference play.  The Spartans are now 4-19 on the year and 2-11 in conference play.

The Dolphins took their first double-digit lead just over five minutes into the game and never looked back.  Leading the first-quarter surge was Jenalyse Alarcon who scored eight points in the first ten minutes.  Dana Phelan then erupted for eleven points in the second, nine coming on 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc.  The Dolphins scored 25 points in the second on their way to a 45-10 halftime lead.  Alexa Quirolo scored eight more in the third as the Spartans inched a bit closer, but the CSI lead was far too big to overcome.  The Spartans pulled as close as thirteen in the fourth, but the Alarcon ensured the CSI lead was never in any jeopardy with eight more points in the period.  The Dolphins would go on to win by nineteen, 76-57, to clinch a first-round bye and a spot in the ECC Championship Semifinals.

Alarcon and Phelan led the way in scoring for the Dolphins with 20 points each.  Quirolo and Kyra Rose each scored 10, and the Dolphins shot 47% from the field as a team.  The Dolphins shot well above 60% in the first half and effectively put the game out of reach after the first 20 minutes.

The Dolphins can only move up in the ECC standings if the Daemen University Wildcats were to lose their final three games.  This sets up a likely trip to Amherst for the ECC Tournament.  First, the Dolphins have three regular season games remaining.  First among those is a home matchup with Roberts Wesleyan University on Wednesday night at 5:00 PM.
