Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS STUNNED BY MAVERICKS AT THE BUZZER IN 79-77 DEFEAT

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team suffered a crushing loss at the buzzer earlier tonight as they were defeated by the Mercy University Mavericks, 79–77.  After leading for the entirety of the second half, the Dolphins fell behind by one with under seven seconds remaining. Messiah Mallory was fouled on the ensuing inbound pass, and hit one of two free throws at the line. The Mavericks then inbounded the ball to half court and got it into the hands of Shedrach Makanjuola for a game-winning floater at the buzzer.  Both teams end the night 5–7 in conference play setting the stage for plenty of intrigue entering the final three weeks of the season.  the Dolphins are now 9–15 on the year while the Mavericks finish the evening 6–15.

The Dolphins got off to a strong start, taking an early 6–0 lead in the opening minutes.  JJ Chestnut scored six early points as the Dolphins went ahead by as many as nine points in the first half.  Mercy took their first lead on one of five TJ Holloway three-pointers with 4:26 to go before halftime, but the dolphins responded with a 12–5 run to end the first half.  They sent the game into halftime with the Dolphins leading, 37–32.

After leading by five at halftime, the Dolphins held on to that lead for nearly the entire second half.  Mercy briefly pulled two within one with 9:54 remaining, but the Dolphins extended that lead to six with five straight points by Messiah Mallory.  Leading by three once again, Justin Zieris connected from beyond the arc to double the CSI lead.  Mallory then hit another three-pointer with 4:41 remaining to increase the CSI lead to to nine.  Mercy would pull two within three with 1:27 left, but the Dolphins went ahead by five from the line moments later.  A Mavericks basket followed by a Dolphins turnover allowed Mercy to cut the CSI lead to one with 43 seconds remaining, and yet another CSI turnover would allow Mercy to ultimately take the lead, 77–76.

Now trailing for the first time since the first half, the Dolphins were left with 6.9 seconds and an inbound from alongside their bench. Immediately, they lobbed the ball in the direction of Mallory who was fouled underneath the basket.  After missing the first of two free throws, the senior hit the second to tie the score at 77.  Following a timeout, the Mavericks inbounded the ball to Nathan Robertson who was quickly double-teamed at half court.  After avoiding a potential traveling call, he found Makanjuola sprinting up the sideline and got him the ball in stride.  Makanjuola then took care of the rest, dribbling half the length of the floor and finishing a floater over Mallory high off the glass for the win, 79-77.

Mallory led the Dolphins with 22 points and three more Dolphins finished and double figures.  Clancy registered 13, Aaron Goldstein scored 11, and Zieris scored 10.  The Dolphins also shot well from the field connecting on 47% of their field goal attempts and 36% of their shots from downtown.  however, the Mavericks shot over 53% from the floor and over 44% from three point range. CSI also struggled with turnovers late in the game finishing with 20 in the loss.  Ethan Robertson mercy with 32 points and Holloway finished with 21 including 5–6 on three-point attempts.

The Dolphins face a tough test this weekend when they visit St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
