Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS WIN STREAK HALTED BY LIONS, 69-45

Rockville Centre, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team saw their six-game win streak halted earlier tonight as they fell to the Molloy University Lions, 69-45.  The loss for the Dolphins is their first in conference play against an opponent other than Daemen University.  They end the night 19-8 on the season and 12-3 against the ECC.  Molloy improves to 14-14 on the year and clinches an ECC playoff spot as they move to 7-8 in conference play.

The Dolphins got off to a poor start shooting in the opening quarter, but they were able to keep the game close with their defense.  CSI shot just 4-21 in the first 10 minutes while Molloy shot nearly 45% from the field.  However, the Lions struggled with turnovers throughout the quarter, and the game went to the second with Molloy leading, 13-11.  A Jenalyse Alarcon three-pointer early in the second quarter cut the Molloy lead to one, and CSI would eventually take the lead, 20-19, on a Dana Phelan layup.  From there, Molloy seized control and held the Dolphins to just three points for the remainder of the half.  Molloy would also end the second on a 9-0 scoring run and led by seven at halftime, 30-23.

Molloy would also score nine of the first ten points in the third quarter to go ahead by fifteen, and the Dolphins simply never found any consistency from the field.  With CSI shooting just 1-17 in the period, the Lions lead grew to 20 at the end of three.  The Dolphins were unable to get any closer than that the rest of the way, and Molloy would go on to win, 69-45.

No Dolphins reached 10 points in the loss, and the team only shot above 33% in the final quarter.  Meanwhile, Molloy shot 41% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc with 40 of their 65 points coming in the paint.  Defensively, the Dolphins forced 19 turnovers in the game, but the Lions were able to force 21 CSI giveaways.  For the Dolphins, three different players recorded 3 or more steals with Kyra Rose leading the way with 5.

The Dolphins will have one last opportunity to reach 20 wins when they face Queens College on Senior Day this Saturday.  The Dolphins and Knights will tip off at 1:00 PM following a pregame ceremony to recognize the five CSI seniors.
