Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

DOLPHINS HOLD OFF LATE LINCOLN RUN TO WIN FIRST-EVER MEETING WITH LIONS, 63-57

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team won their second straight game earlier tonight as they defeated the Lincoln University Lions, 63–57.  With the win, the Dolphins improved to 15–7 on the season.  The Lions fall to 9–13 with the loss.  the CSI victory comes in the first-ever meeting between the two teams after last year's game was canceled.  Tonight also marked the final non-conference game on the Dolphins schedule.

Both teams got off to a slow offensive start with just six points scored in the first four minutes of play.  After trailing 6–2 at the 5:42 mark in the first quarter, the Dolphins went on a 7-0 run to take a three-point lead.  That lead would grow as large as nine on a three by Mia Fuller, and CSI would end the quarter leading by seven, 17–10.  The Dolphins scored their first basket of the second quarter at the 7:25 mark and were held without any points for nearly three minutes after that.  During that time, Lincoln was able to tie the score at 19–19 before the Dolphins finally ended the Lions scoring run with a basket by Kyra Rose.  The Dolphins ultimately ended the quarter on an 8–0 run, culminating with a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half by Amber Abusbeih.

The Dolphins took an eight-point lead into the third-quarter, but it was Lincoln that scored the first eight points after halftime to tie the score at 27.  From here, Alexa Quirolo helped keep the Dolphins ahead with back-to-back jumpers, and Abusbeih made it a four-point game with a basket off a Lions turnover.  A three by Quirolo would increase the Dolphins lead back to nine points, and by the 2:55 mark the CSI run reached 13–0.  Another three by Quirolo grew grew the lead to fifteen, and the Dolphins would go into the fourth leading, 49–36.

Early in the fourth-quarter, the Lions began to work their way back into the game as they outscored the Dolphins 18–6 during the first five minutes of the period.  This cut the CSI lead to one with 3:54 remaining in the game.  Dorothy Wiese extended the lead back to three with a layup, and Jenalyse Alarcon added two more with a layup of her own.  Defensively, the Dolphins held the Lions just three points the rest of the way as they went on to win by six, 63–57.

Alarcon led the Dolphins with 14 points and 7 rebounds.  Abusbeih scored 13 and Quirolo scored 12.  As a team, the Dolphins shot 41% in the game behind a strong offensive showing in the second half.  Defensively, they held the Lions to just 34% from the field and 1-15 from beyond the arc.

The Dolphins will return to conference play for the final six games of the season beginning at The Tank on Saturday at 3:00 PM against the University of the District of Columbia.
