Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO THREE WITH VICTORY OVER UDC, 76-67

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Women's Basketball Team extended their win streak to three games earlier today as they defeated the University of the District of Columbia by the final score of 76–67.  The victory improves the Dolphins to 16–7 on the season and 9–2 against the East Coast Conference.  The loss drops UDC to 7–13 on the year and 5–6 and conference play.  The victory earned the Dolphins a season series sweep against the Firebirds and is there second consecutive conference win.  The Dolphins have also tightened their grip on the number two seed in the East Coast Conference and can move closer to clinching a top two seed in the playoffs with a win against Mercy University at home on Wednesday night.

Both teams got off to a hot start offensively with neither side going in front by more than one possession until the final minutes of the opening quarter.  With the score tied at 10–10, Amber Abusbeih and Alexa Quirolo connected on back-to-back three pointers to put the Dolphins in front by six.  The Firebirds responded quickly with an 8–0 run to go in front, 18–16, but Quirolo delivered another three-pointer to put the Dolphins ahead at the end of one.  The Dolphins briefly fell behind early in the second quarter, but once again consecutive three-pointers gave CSI the lead.  Abusbeih got things started with another three followed by two more from Madison HaggettDana Phelan then made it four straight CSI three-pointers giving the Dolphins their biggest lead of the game, 33-26.  The CSI lead would grow as large as thirteen before halftime, and the Dolphins would head to the locker room leading, 47–36.

The Dolphins appeared poised to run away with the game early in the third quarter as their lead quickly grew to nineteen points early in the period.  Behind frequent trips to the free-throw line for Jenalyse Alarcon and Kyra Rose, the CSI lead remained double figures until there was 3:21 remaining in the quarter.  CSI only registered one made field goal in the third, and as turnovers began to pile up, UDC slowly erased their deficit.  The Firebirds got as close as five prior to the start of the fourth, and they entered the final quarter trailing, 64–55.  CSI went ahead by as many as fourteen points early in the fourth quarter, but once again UDC mounted a scoring run.  The Firebirds would score eleven of the next fourteen points to cut the CSI lead to six with 2:20 remaining.  However, the CSI defense would hold UDC without another basket the rest of the way as the Dolphins secured a 76–67 victory.

Alarcon led the Dolphins with 17 points and finished the game 11–12 from the line.  Four more Dolphins scored in double figures, and every Dolphin that entered the game scored.  Six different Dolphins recorded at least two assists, and CSI shot 41% from distance despite only making one three-pointer in the second half.  CSI ultimately attempted 36 free throws in the win, making 25.  Laci Johnson led UDC in scoring with 22 points and reached the 1000-point mark for her collegiate career.  Tori Williams added 15 points and seven rebounds in the defeat.

The Dolphins can move to the brink of clinching a top two seed in the conference playoffs when they face Mercy University at home on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
