Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DOLPHINS SCORE BIG ALUMNI DAY VICTORY OVER UDC, 78-55

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Men's Basketball Team scored a decisive victory in conference play earlier today as they defeated the University of the District of Columbia, 78–55.  With the win, the Dolphins improved to 9–14 on the season and 5–6 in conference play. The Firebirds end the day 4–15 on the year and 2–9 against the ECC.  The win for the Dolphins is their fourth straight against UDC and snaps a three-game losing skid.

Both teams struggled from the field in the early going, but it was the Firebirds that jumped out to an early seven-point lead.  Trailing 11–4, Justin Zieris connected on back-to-back three-pointers to cut the UDC lead to one.  Soon after, Joey Poulin even the score at 13-13 with another CSI thee, and Zieris added his third of the game to put the Dolphins ahead.  From there, Asa Kone delivered consecutive basket baskets to put the dolphins in front by three.  However, UDC went on a 7–0 run to go ahead by four. That lead would not grow any further for the remainder of the half and the game reached halftime with the Firebirds leading, 29–26.

Despite going into the half behind, the Dolphins dominated the early portion of the second half and quickly built their largest lead of the game at nine points.  That lead would briefly grow to eleven at the midway point of the half, but UDC would pull back to within single digits with 7:42 remaining in the game.  This is where the Dolphins ceased control for good as Kone scored on consecutive possessions to extend the lead to thirteen.  He continued to give the Firebirds issues defensively the rest of the way as the Dolphins built their lead to as many as 24 points.  CSI would go on to win by a final score of 78-55 behind one of their best halves of the season.

Kone lead the way in scoring for the Dolphins with 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds, his third double-double of the season.  Zieris was second on the team in scoring with 14 points on 4–8 from three-point range.  Messiah Mallory also recorded a double-double in the victory with 12 points and 14 rebounds.  After shooting just 26% in the first half, the Dolphins shot nearly 60% from the floor during the final 20 minutes and held the Firebirds under 35% shooting during that time.  They also held UDC without a three-pointer for the entire second half and limited the Firebirds to just 2–11 from beyond the arc.

The Dolphins next be in action when they face Mercy University at 7:30 PM on Wednesday night in a game that will have major playoff implications.
