SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR TO SMSU ON THIRD DAY AT THE SPRING GAMES

Clermont, FL – The College of Staten Island Softball Team dropped a pair of games against Southwest Minnesota State University today as they Mustangs defeated the Dolphins 7-0 and 11-4.  The Dolphins end the day 5-3 and the Mustangs end the day 7-7.

Game 1
The Mustangs took the early lead in game one and never looked back as they scored three unearned runs in the first inning.  The rally started with a leadoff single that was immediately followed by a Dolphins error on a dropped fly ball.  A fielder's choice ground ball that resulted in no outs then loaded the bases, and another ground ball resulted in a force play at the plate for the game's first out.  A short pop up that was caught in foul ground then resulted in a potential double play at third base, but the CSI throw got away to bring home the game's first run.  Now trailing 1-0, a 2-RBI single plated two more to put SMSU ahead by three.  The Dolphins would later strand two in scoring position in the second before the Mustangs added another run in the third.  CSI then stranded two more in the fourth, and left the bases loaded in the sixth.  Meanwhile, the Mustangs would extend their lead to five in the fifth and would score two more in the seventh inning of a 7-0 win.

Five Dolphins registered a single hit in the game and the only CSI extra-base hit was a double by Olivia WanserBridget Motley was officially 1-1 at the plate and drew two of the five CSI walks.  Alexandra Frenza took the loss allowing five runs, only two earned, in 5.0 innings.  The CSI bullpen then allowed two runs on three hits in the final two innings.

Game 2
Just as the Mustangs did in game one, the Dolphins jumped out to an early lead in game two.  Four straight one-out walks brought home the game's first run before Bridget Motley chased home two more with an RBI single.  Soleil Smith then made it 4-0 with a single through the right side, but the Dolphins could not add any more in the inning.  SMSU responded in the home first with a three-spot against CSI starter Marena Grenier collecting five hits in the inning.  The big blow came on 2-RBI hit by Brynn Webber, and the inning ended with the Dolphins leading, 4-3.  This score would stand until the fifth when the Mustangs broke the game wide open with a huge rally.  A leadoff triple started the inning, and an RBI single quickly tied the game.  A walk put two on base before five consecutive Mustangs reached base.  Along the way, seven more runs came in to score putting SMSU ahead, 11-4.  This would ultimately be the final score as the Dolphins lost their third straight.

The Dolphins will have an off day tomorrow before taking the field again on Thursday for two more games.  First, they will take on Bemidji State University at 9:00 AM.  Next, they will have an extended break between games as they face Salem University on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 PM.
