SOFTBALL FINISHES ONE WIN SHY OF POSTSEASON WITH LOSS TO D'YOUVILLE IN SEASON FINALE

Staten Island, NY – The College of Staten Island Softball Team finished the 2025 season one win shy of the postseason for the second straight year as they earned a split of their final ECC doubleheader against D'Youville University.  Needing to win both games to reach the playoffs, the Dolphins took game one by a final score of 2-1.  In game two, the Dolphins led 8-6 entering the seventh inning, but the Saints rallied for four runs to go in front by two.  In the home seventh, CSI would load the bases, but the Dolphins season would end there as they dropped their final game, 10-8.  The Dolphins end the season 19-21 overall and 7-12 against the ECC.  D'Youville enters the ECC playoffs as the number four seed with an overall record of 19-17 and a 9-11 conference record.

GAME 1
Anissa Acosta got things started for the Dolphins in the home first with a leadoff single that turned into three bases following a D'Youville error.  Acosta would then score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 before Mariah Carcano reached on the second CSI base hit of the inning.  A groundout advanced Carcano to second, and a fly ball moved the senior to third.  Another wild pitch ultimately brought her home to give the Dolphins a two run lead, and this would be the last time that either team would score until the seventh.  D'Youville would strand the bases loaded in the fourth, but neither team would leave more than a single runner on base after that.  CSI starter Kennedie Ruth and Saints starter Sarah Parzych both went the distance, and the two offenses combined for just seven hits.  The lone run scored by D'Youville came during a seventh-inning rally that put the tying run on base.  However, the Saints threat would end with a groundout as the Dolphins took the game one victory, 2-1.

The three CSI hits belonged to Acosta, Carcano, and Olivia Wanser with two of those coming during the first inning.  In the circle, Ruth pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five.  She moved to 7-7 with the win and pitched a complete game for the seventh time this season.

GAME 2
The Saints mounted an early threat with two base runners during the first inning of game two, but the Dolphins turned a 5-5-3 double-play to help keep D'Youville off the board.  However, the Saints would strike for three runs on four hits in the second to go in front, 3-0.  The Dolphins would quickly answer right back with a five-run third inning that saw CSI send eight to the plate.  An RBI hit by Alyssa Acosta plated the first run, and a ground ball by Anissa Acosta plated the second.  An error brought home one more, and a pair of RBI hits by Carcano and Amanda Stalker capped off the big inning.  After the leadoff batter reached for the Saints in the third, the Dolphins turned to Alexandra Frenza in relief of Marena Grenier.  Frenza quickly recorded three outs, but she was unable to get through the fourth unscathed.

With two runs already home in the inning and the game now tied 5-5, the Dolphins turned to Ruth in relief.  The game one starter would strand two Saints on base to keep the game tied, but D'Youville would eventually take the lead back with one run in the fifth.  Now trailing 6-5, the Dolphins put together a three-run fifth inning punctuated by RBI hits from Bridget Motley, Natlalya Knoth, and Alyssa Acosta.  The 8-6 CSI lead would stand until the seventh when the Saints rallied to save their season.  With the tying runs already home behind three hits in the inning, Summer Clark delivered a full count, go-ahead, 2-RBI single to put the Saints ahead, 10-8.  The Dolphins would then load the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but their rally ended here in a heartbreaking 10-8 defeat.

Motley led the Dolphins with three hits in the game, and Knoth, Stalker and Alyssa Acosta each had two.  After the two teams combined for just seven hits in game one, the two sides collected 32 hits in the second game of the doubleheader.

For the Saints, the win sends them to the ECC postseason as the number four seed in the conference playoffs.  The Dolphins see their season end with elimination from playoff contention in their final game for the second consecutive year.
