ROCHESTER, NY – The College of Staten Island women's basketball team traveled to Rochester, NY on Saturday afternoon for an East Coast Conference matchup against Roberts Wesleyan University. In a tightly contested game that featured multiple lead changes, the Red Hawks edged the Dolphins, 75-74, in the final seconds to earn their first ECC win of the season, dropping CSI to 3-5 in conference play.
The hosts set the tone early, outscoring the Dolphins 22-17 in the opening quarter. Kyra Rose scored CSI's first points from the freethrow line, while Dana Phelan later knocked down a three to give the Dolphins a brief 7-6 lead, however, Roberts Wesleyan responded and held the advantage heading into the second quarter.
Rose and Phelan continued to lead the Dolphins offensively, combining for five early points in the second to tie the game at 22. The Red Hawks answered with a 5-0 run, but CSI outscored Roberts 21-19 in the quarter. Despite the strong push, the Dolphins entered halftime trailing 41-38.
Phelan opened the scoring in the third quarter, and Rose followed by putting CSI back on top, 42-41, from the charity stripe. The teams traded baskets throughout the period, but a late layup by Racky Kane sent the Dolphins into the fourth quarter down three, 55-52.
CSI opened the final stanza with momentum, as Kane and Giuliana Dito sparked a 5-0 run to give the Dolphins a 57-55 lead. Kane added another midrange jumper to extend the advantage, and CSI maintained control for much of the fourth quarter. However, Roberts Wesleyan stayed within striking distance and pulled within one, 74-73, from the free-throw line in the closing moments. With six seconds remaining, the Dolphins were unable to secure a defensive rebound, allowing the Red Hawks to convert two freethrows and seal the 75-74 victory.
Rose led all scorers with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, while also dishing out four assists. Phelan finished with 19 points, including two three-pointers, and Dito added 13 points with three shots from beyond the arc. Jasanii Francis-Torres rounded out the Dolphins' double-figure scorers with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
The Dolphins (7-13) return to the Tank on Wednesday, Jan. 28, to host Queens College in another ECC matchup, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM.
