ROCHESTER, NY – The College of Staten Island men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed at the East Coast Conference (ECC) Championships on Thursday in Rochester, NY at Roberts Field on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan University.
The men finished fifth overall with 44 points, while the women placed sixth with 41 points.
At the conclusion of the championship, the Dolphins recorded nine medals along with four women's school records. First and second place finishers in each event earned First Team All-ECC honors, while third and fourth place finishers were named Second Team. In relay events, the first-place team earned First Team honors, while the second-place team earned Second Team recognition.
Both gold medals for the Dolphins came in the women's field events, beginning with Angelina Guerriero, who opened the meet with a first place finish in the javelin throw with a school-record distance of 34.34m. Adonijah Washington followed with a first-place finish in the triple jump, recording a mark of 11.74m.
Four of the Dolphins' five silver medals came on the men's side, while Mazzy Cirinelli secured a second place finish for the women in the high jump with a mark of 1.50m (4'11"). Sam Whelan claimed two silver medals, finishing second in both the 100m and 200m dash events. He advanced to the finals with a strong qualifying performance in the 100m and posted a time of 10.86 in the final. In the 200m, he recorded a time of 21.92 to place second. Steven Elcock added an individual silver medal and contributed to the men's 4x400 relay team's second-place finish. Elcock placed second in the 400m dash with a time of 50.14 and joined Kingjohn 'KJ' Ede, Ibrahima Diallo, and Karran Riley in the 4x400 relay, where they finished with a time of 3:21.72.
The men also earned two third place finishes to round out the team's medal count. Christopher O'Brien placed third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.84, and the 4x100 relay team of Elcock, Akeem Pollard, Jeremiah Downer, and Sam Whelan finished third with a time of 42.75.
Three additional school records were broken on the women's side. The 4x100 relay team of Jacqueline Washings, Mia Bowden, Precious Dillon, and Adonijah Washington set a new program record with a time of 49.76. Raquel Pasco established a new mark in the 10,000m with a time of 46:46.67, and Adriana Roa set a new standard in the 800m with a time of 2:21.93.
On top of the medals and school records, the Dolphins witnessed personal best performances by Kevin Deyo in the 10K (37:44.49), Walter Gavilanes (11:34.67) and Pedro Astudillo (13:01.83) in the 3K Steeplechase, Joseph Ortiz in the 100m (12.66),Mia Bowden in the 100m (12.65), Downer (22.73), O'Brein (23.49), and Ortiz (25.74) in the 200m, Luca Schelling in the Discus (22.42m), Zaria Dinkins in the Javelin (26.33m), and Cirinelli in the Long Jump (4.45m).
Adonijah Washington will compete for a spot in the NCAA postseason in the triple jump at the Twilight Invitational in West Point, NY next Thursday, May 7.
