SPARKILL, NY – The College of Staten Island softball team traveled to Sparkill, NY on Friday afternoon to take on St. Thomas Aquinas College in an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader.
The Dolphins were swept in the twin bill, falling to 12-20 overall and 7-11 in conference play.
Game One: STAC 9, CSI 0 (5 Inn.)
CSI was held scoreless in the opener as the Spartans pulled away with a five-run fourth inning en route to a 9-0 win in five innings.
The Dolphins recorded four hits, including doubles from Madilyn Paul and Milene Mendoza, along with singles from Kaylee Cary and Presley Borne. Alyssa Acosta drew the team's lone walk.
In the third inning, Acosta led off with a walk and Borne followed with a single to put two runners on with no outs, but CSI was unable to capitalize as the Spartans recorded three straight outs to escape the threat.
Kennedie Ruth started in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings with one strikeout, while Emma Powell added 1.2 innings of relief and struck out three.
Game Two: STAC 4, CSI 1
In game two, Bridget Motley accounted for the Dolphins' only run of the day.
STAC carried its momentum into the second game, scoring twice in the first inning for a 2-0 lead and adding another run in the fourth to extend the advantage to 3-0. CSI broke through in the top of the sixth when Motley, with two outs and a 2-2 count, launched a solo home run to center field, her first of the season and second of her career, to make it 3-1.
The Spartans answered in the bottom half of the inning with an insurance run to secure the 4-1 victory and complete the sweep.
Along with Motley's home run hit, Abbie Morris, and Soleil Smith also each recorded a hit in the contest.
The Dolphins return home on Saturday for their final regular-season games and Senior Day celebration at the CSI Softball Complex, hosting Mercy University with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM.
