STATEN ISLAND, NY – The College of Staten Island men's soccer team took the pitch at home for their first conference match on Saturday afternoon and battled the Saints of D'Youville University to a scoreless draw. The Dolphins were held without a goal for the first time this season and finish the day 2-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 against the ECC. The Saints end the day 2-3-3 overall and 0-0-1 against the the conference.
The Saints opened the match with three quality scoring chances, two of which were stopped by CSI goalkeeper Carlos Romero Astacio. Peterson Larose posted the first CSI shot of the match 14 minutes in, but the Saints would go on to record six straight shot attempts entering the final 15 minutes of the half. It was in the 37th minute that Larose attempted a shot from in close that represented the best CSI scoring opportunity. Saints goalkeeper Brennan Restorick stopped the shot by the CSI junior from point blank range to send the game to halftime scoreless.
The second half saw the Saints connect with iron for the second time in the match among multiple opportunities to take the lead. First, Romero Astacio opened the half with another save followed by another Saints shot off target. It was the third attempt of the second half for D'Youville that hit the post, and their final attempt of the match 23 minutes later cleared the bar by just inches. The Dolphins also tallied five shots during the final 45 minutes, but none of those were on target.
Larose led the Dolphins with three shots, and Romero Astacio collected eight saves during an impressive performance in goal. Following a hat trick earlier in the week, Yair Roman registered a pair of shots on free kick attempts during today's draw.
With the draw, the College of Staten Island men's soccer team is now to 2-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. The Dolphins continue play against the East Coast Conference (ECC) on Wednesday night at 7:30 at Queens College.
