ORANGEBURG, NY – The College of Staten Island men's soccer team recorded its first win of the regular season in shutout fashion Saturday afternoon, defeating Dominican University (NY), 3-0, in Orangeburg, NY. The Dolphins scored twice in the opening half before adding a third goal in the second half to secure the victory, improving to 1-2 on the season and earning Michael Meagher his first career win as head coach.
The Dolphins controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, registering two shots within the first five minutes of regulation. CSI eventually earned a corner kick and executed a quick set play into the right corner. The ball was sent into the middle of the box and deflected off a Charger defender, falling to the foot of Matthew Beaton, who finished the chance to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after, the Dolphins capitalized on a turnover at midfield with Matthew Brito sending the ball downfield to Deniz Karcher, who outran his defender before finding the back of the net to extend the CSI lead to 2-0. The Dolphins carried their two-goal advantage into halftime while keeping the Chargers off the scoreboard.
The second half saw fewer scoring opportunities, but CSI added one final goal to put the game out of reach. Peterson Larose stepped up to take a penalty kick and calmly placed his shot into the left side of the net, giving the Dolphins a 3-0 advantage and securing the shutout victory.
CSI outshot Dominican, 15-12, with seven of the Dolphins' attempts finding the target. Beaton, Karcher, and Larose each found the back of the net, while Carlos Romero Astacio earned his first win of the season in goal, making three saves. One of those stops came as a critical save in the second half to preserve the Dolphins' shutout.
The College of Staten Island men's soccer team will return to action Wednesday when the Dolphins host Caldwell University at 12:00 PM at Dolphin Soccer Park.
