College of Staten Island Athletics

Swimmer Gabriella Villarruel has been named the College of Staten Island’s Female Athlete of the Month for January 2009. Also a star player on the CSI tennis team, Villarruel has had an exceptionally well run in the pool this month helping her team to a 6-4 overall record.

The 5 foot 4 sophomore has taken gold medals in all six 100 butterfly events she’s participated in the team’s six meets in January. Swimming the 200 Individual Medley three times she has also taken three first place finishes. With various team members, Villarruel has helped the relay teams to three gold wins in the 200 Medley Relay.

The Curtis product holds six CSI school records including five relays one individual event. As a freshman, her time of 2:40.99 in the 200 Butterfly in 2008 is the best in CSI history.
