The College of Staten Island began their women’s soccer program in 2004, and it didn’t take long to land a player who redefined the sport, set virtually all of the records and set every future competitive standard.  Demi-Jean Martorano first arrived on the CSI scene in 2010, and from the opening whistle to the final seconds of her career, the sport would be forever-shaped by her accomplishments.

A highly-touted recruit from New Dorp High School, Martorano played virtually every position on the pitch minus keeper, and sometimes within the framework of a single game.  That held true at CSI as well, but it didn’t take long to see that her greatest gift was putting the ball in the back of the net.  Just 5:19 into her first collegiate game, Martorano scored the first of 16 goals registered as a freshman.  She would also add five assists on the year, and five of CSI’s 11 wins on the season came from her game-winning goals.

The Dolphins would fall in the CUNYAC Championship Game that year, but Martorano was already the school’s single-season scoring leader and the CUNYAC’s Rookie of the Year, setting the stage for a fantastic career.

It began with a tremendous sophomore effort.  Martorano broke her own school record with 18 goals in her second effort, complete with seven game-winners and a total of two hat-tricks.  What’s more was CSI’s perfect run through the CUNYAC season that came with a Postseason Championship and the school’s first ECAC Tournament berth since 2007.

Martorano’s assault on the record books did not end there.  In 2012, Martorano averaged better than a goal per game, knocking in a school-record 25 goals on 90 shots in 20 games, adding a career high nine assists.  Martorano equaled her school record with seven game-winners, a mark still standing.  She also became the first Dolphins player to register five goals in a single game, setting that record that has since been only tied once.  She was named the CUNYAC Player of the Year.

Hard to believe Martorano could duplicate the effort a year later, but the senior ended her career at the very top of her game, breaking her own record a third consecutive year with 26 goals to go with five assists on 123 shots.  The Dolphins recorded a school-record 16 wins and buzzed through another perfect CUNYAC regular season.  Martorano ended her career with yet another CUNYAC Player of the Year award, finishing as the school’s all-time leader in goals with 85, total points with 197, game-winning goals with 25, and shots with 362.  Her 27 total assists rank second in team history, and she finished her sensational career with a record nine total hat-tricks.  To add to her list of accomplishments, Martorano also doubled as a student-athlete on the women’s tennis team in 2010, where she amassed a 2-2 record in singles and doubles play.
