Very few student-athletes had the impact on their respective teams like Kevin Crombie did for the CSI baseball program.  The submarine-style, hard-throwing, pitching ace became synonymous with the success of the program in the late-1980’s, as the Dolphins dominated the diamond within the CUNYAC and beyond.  Crombie was an immediate fixture on the hill from his freshman season in 1989, when he was an opening day reliever for then-manager Mike Rozzi.  What followed was four years of unparalleled greatness and a record-breaking career.

Crombie went 4-0 his freshman season as a reliever, then matriculated into a starter his sophomore season under Hall of Fame manager Fran Hirschy, putting up one of the best single seasons by a pitcher in CSI history, accumulating an 8-1 record with a career season-best 1.79 ERA in 68 innings en route to a CUNYAC Championship, Knickerbocker Championship, and the school’s first-ever ECAC Championship.  The next two seasons, Crombie continued his dynamic career earning eight wins in each season, both CSI single-season highs, and he fanned a total of 180 batters his final two seasons.  The Dolphins earned another CUNYAC crown in 1992, and the team made its first and only trips ever to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, where they boasted a 5-4 record over the two seasons.  Crombie tossed a two-hit shutout to introduce the 1992 tournament in a win over RPI.  To close his career the slinging righty posted an incredible 28-4 record in 47 appearances with a 2.40 ERA.  He fanned 281 batters and allowed just 163 hits in 229 innings.  He still holds the CSI career record for wins and ranks in the all-time top three in  12 other career, single-season and single game pitching records.

Crombie’s individual successes followed him after his days at CSI, when he was drafted by Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers organization.  Crombie had stints with the Niagara Falls Rapids and the Fayetteville Generals.  He is the first baseball player to be selected into the CSI Athletics Hall of Fame.
