The City College of New York used a three-goal second half to power to a victory over the College of Staten Island in CUNYAC men's soccer action, 3-1, in a game played earlier this morning at Randall's Island. The CSI men fell to 1-8-1 overall and 1-3 in the CUNYAC, while the Beavers raised their marks to 2-6, 1-2, respectively.
While the final statistics showed a game that was marginally paced by CCNY, the Beavers did dominate play in the first half, earning a series of great chances through the opening 45 minutes, but were ultimately thwarted at every turn. CSI's best chance came on a
Dong Luu breakaway attempt midway through the stanza that bounced just a few feet wide of goal. CCNY out-shot CSI, 12-4 in the opening period (5-2 on goal) as CSI keeper
Ahmed El-Ghareib made a couple of high caliber saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0 going into half time.
In the second half, however, CCNY made best use of the only three shots that were shot on target. The hosts out-shot CSI, 12-7, in the second stanza but only three were on goal, and all three found the back of the net within a span of just 9 minutes. CSI was first hit with an ejection, as defesemen
Stephen Caifa was forced to leave the game because of a second yellow card at the 61:37 mark. Just 1:05 later, CCNY's Edwards Ames rifled a shot past El-Ghareib to give the Beavers the lead against the short-handed Dolphins.
Forced to press, CSI then fell victim to counter-attacking goals within a 1:08 span starting at 70:34. Samuel Nakada scored both goals, the second on a breakaway. With 10:54 to play, CSI did tally via a
Kenneth Zaw unassisted effort, but for CSI it was too little too late as the Beavers threw much of their team back in the final minutes to preserve the win.
The physical game saw a total of 36 fouls and eight yellow cards. Apart from the two on Caifa, CSI's
Adam Birnbaum,
Dong Luu, and
John Tanna were also cautioned.
