Box Score John Jay earned their fourth consecutive victory with a 65-62 win over the College of Staten Island on Friday evening at the Doghouse.
With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 7-9 (5-2 CUNYAC) this season, while CSI is 4-11 (3-4 CUNYAC).
The Bloodhounds were led by Jessica Liriro with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Dominique Grice added 15 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and six steals. Allana Beddoe added 14 points in the victory.
The rejuvenated Bloodhounds led most of the contest. The visiting Dolphins led early in the contest, and had several one point leads later in the first half. CSI's latest lead came with 4:50 to play in the opening stanza when the Dolphins led 23-22.
But the Bloodhounds closed out the first half by outscoring CSI 6-2 to lead 28-25 at halftime.
John Jay opened the second half on a 4-1 spurt to take a 32-26 lead with 18:14 to play.
CSI dwindled down the lead to two points on several occasions, but could never tie or grab the lead.
The Bloodhounds led 36-34 with 16:31 to play before gradually breaking the game open. They outscored CSI 15-4 over an eight minute span to take a 13-point lead as John Jay led 51-38 with 8:54 to play.
Moments later, John Jay increased the lead further and led by as much as 15 as they led 58-43 with 6:19 to go.
But the Dolphins did not go away and battled back to make a game of it. CSI chipped away over the ensuing moments, and pulled to within nine with 4:02 to go as the Dolphins trailed 58-49.
John Jay still kept CSI at bay and were up 64-53 with 1:41 to play, before the Dolphins made a ferocious run in the late stages.
CSI quickly raced off seven straight points to pull to within four with forty-two seconds left as the Dolphins trailed 64-60.
After a quick foul, Lirio made 1-of-2 at the line to put John Jay up by five. But with twenty-eight seconds, CSI made two free throws and suddenly were down by three.
Then a John Jay turnover gave the Dolphins possession of the basketball. But CSI failed to capitalize in the closing seconds as the Bloodhounds held on for the victory.
CSI was led by
Allie Shanahan and
Katelyn Hepworth with a team co-high 16 points each, while
Olivia Tierno had a game co-high 11 rebounds.
The Dolphins held a 32-24 advantage on points in the paint, while the Bloodhounds had a 22-15 edge on points off turnovers.
CSI is back in action on Monday, January 24 as they take on St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn in a 6:00 pm game.
