Box Score In a game where the visiting Cardinals committed a whopping 41 turnovers, the College of Staten Island women's basketball squad overcame an early deficit to score a one-sided, 64-41, win over visiting York College in the opening CUNYAC contest for both teams. CSI won its second straight game, improving to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while York slipped to 1-5, 0-1 respectively.
Despite the lop-sided final, it was the visitors that assumed early control, staking themselves to a 9-3 lead after the game's first 4:11. The first half saw CSI trying to chip away at the lead, and the Dolphins finally overtook York on the scoreboard thanks to a 12-5 run that gave CSI a 19-18 lead with 7:00 to go in the stanza.
Katelyn Hepworth spearheaded the run, converting a pair of baskets, while
Olivia Tierno, seeing her first action of the season, nailed a three-ball. From there, CSI held a modest edge, taking just a 28-24 lead into the lockers.
In the second half, CSI amped up the defensive pressure, and was mired in the turnover, scoring only seven points in the first 13 minutes of the second half as CSI used another lengthy 21-7 run to open up a 49-31lead.
Nikki Fabozzi tallied seven of the points on back-to-back layups and another three-point field goal.
From there, CSI hit cruise control, maximizing on an onslaught of mistakes by York as they employed a press. The Dolphins biggest lead of the game was 26 points, en route to the final.
CSI was led by Fabozzi's 17 points, adding six rebounds.
Jaclyn Tocco finished with 13 markers and seven boards, while Hepworth tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds. Joanna Josama led York with 20 points, while Shadae Rice pitched in with 10. The pair, however, combined for 25 turnovers, off-setting a 58-50 edge York had on the boards.
CSI will return home on Sunday, when they host The Sage Colleges at 12 Noon on non-conference play.
