Box Score The College of Staten Island women's basketball squad blitzed through Medgar Evers College early, and then never looked back, scoring a lop-sided, 60-30, win at the Sports & Recreation Center as part of CUNYAC play. CSI, which snapped a four-game skid, improved to 5-6 overall and a perfect 2-0 in the conference, while Medgar Evers fell to 2-10, 0-2, respectively.
After a Chantal Biscette cut CSI's lead to 2-1 at 18:36, CSI ripped off 17 straight points, spearheaded by a couple of baskets each by
Katelyn Hepworth,
Olivia Tierno and
Danielle Kartalis. Shortly after, another basket by Hepworth put CSI up 22-3 with 7:41 to go in the first frame, and the Dolphins were in complete control. The Cougars did respond well, however, ripping off the next seven points, part of a 13-3 run to end the stanza and cut CSI's lead to single digits, 25-16, at the half.
CSI went cold to end the first half, but quickly regained composure in the second half, blowing out to a 12-2 run over the first five minutes to once again assume full control at 37-18. After a Chathalia Jones three-pointer and a Tiffany Woodbine bucket helped cut the lead to 15, CSI went on another tear, popping off a 15-2 run over a numbing six minutes to put the game out of complete reach, 57-27, with 4:19 to go. Hepworth scored another three baskets in the run, part of her game-high 20 points and team-high 10 rebounds.
CSI only shot 30% in the win (24-80) as both Tierno and freshman
Nikki Fabozzi added 12 points. The Dolphins, however, forced a whopping 48 MEC turnovers, as the Cougars could only muster 25% from the floor as well (10-37). The Cougars did get an inspired performance from Biscette, who played all 40 minutes, pouring in 10 points and an astounding 26 rebounds.
The Dolphins will be back to action on Saturday, when they host Brooklyn College at 1pm in another CUNYAC test.
