Box Score Women's basketball fell to Brooklyn College, 54-43, in Saturday's conference match up at the Sports and Recreation Center. CSI drops to a 5-7 record and takes their first CUNYAC loss, 2-1. The Bulldogs extended to an 8-4 record and a 3-0 conference record.
The low scoring first half began with CSI's small lead before Justine O'Callahan's steal and fast break layup gave Brooklyn the go ahead at 9:29. From there the Bulldogs used a 10-0 run to extend their lead 8, their best of the half. CSI answered with a 7 point run to tie the game at 17 behind two
Jaclyn Tocco lay-ups and free throws with 5:40 to go on the clock. Both teams were silent for two minutes before Ashley McCaughan's jumper put Brooklyn ahead two. Again CSI answered, this time with a
Nikki Fabozzi three point goal for the lead. The Bulldogs tacked on the next six points before back-to-back baskets by Fabozzi (three pointer) and
Olivia Tierno (layup) in the final seconds put the score at a tie into halftime.
A layup by Charnelle St. Laurent and a free throw by O'Callahan just 1:45 into the second half gave Brooklyn a three point lead, however, seconds later,
Nicole Quattrocchi hit a three to tie the game. O'Callahan hit another two free throws and added a lay-up to give the Bulldogs a 32-28 lead. Back-to-back layups by
Danielle Kartalis and
Katelyn Hepworth at the 14 minute mark gave CSI back the lead by one, their last for the remainder of the game. Brooklyn added another four points before CSI would come close one more time as a Fabozzi three pointer tied the game at 11:42. The Bulldogs pulled away with a 9-0 run before taking their greatest lead of 12 at 2:33. Despite making 3-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes, Brooklyn was able to keep the Dolphins at bay for the win.
Both teams had 29 turnovers apiece. Brooklyn saw 23 points off of turnovers to the Dolphins 17 points. CSI shot 66.7% from free-throw range to Brooklyn's 44.8%.
O'Callahan led for the Bulldogs with 19 pints, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Lauren Plagainos totaled 14 points to go with four steals while Melissa St. Louis had a game-high 13 rebounds with seven points.
Fabozzi led the Dolphins with 12 points and five rebounds. Quattrocchi added 10 points shooting 2-for-4 from three point range and five rebounds. Tocco added six points, five rebounds and four steals.
The Dolphins will host Baruch College next Saturday, January 14, in a 1:00 pm game followed by the men at 3:00 pm.
