Box Score The College of Staten Island men's soccer team saw their modest two-game win skein snapped today, falling to visiting City College of New York, 3-2, in double overtime, as part of CUNYAC play at the CSI Soccer Complex. Originally scheduled to be played in Purchase, New York, the game was moved to CSI due to field conditions. CCNY lifted its overall record to 5-6-2, and CUNYAC mark to 3-1-1, while the Dolphins fell to 8-8, 3-3, respectively.
The game was a tale of two halves, as CCNY seemed to control and at times even dominate play in the first half, while CSI wrestled back control in the second frame, and the scoreboard showed exactly that. In the opening stanza, CCNY scored first on a Samuel Nkama goal, receiving a long aerial ball from the left side from Chon Ngai. Nkama raced in to his right and buried his goal passed CSI keeper
Ahmed El-Ghareib at the 26:46 mark, giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
CCNY continued to press and earned a host of great opportunities. Despite getting eight shots in the frame, it was a CSI error that led to the second goal of the game. Off of a corner kick, CSI scrambled to get the ball out of their goal mouth, and unfortunately a deflection by CSI defender Ahn Le got passed El-Ghareib for an own goal, giving CCNY a 2-0 edge with just 3:09 left in the first half.
The Dolphins, who were out-shot 8-4 in the first stanza needed a lift, and got it after a brief intermission. CSI began to pressure towards an equalizer, and the consistent pressure got CSI down 2-1 just over six minutes into the second frame. A
Lirim Begai cross from the left found the head of
Nedgy Nazon, and the conference's leading scorer punched the ball passed CCNY keeper Tayfun Kucuk. With momentum on their side, CSI struck again just over 10 minutes later. This time
Alfonso Castaneda tucked a ball into Nazon in the middle of the field, and Nazon calmly beat one defender and then faked out Kucuk to score an easy, one-on-one, goal to knot the score at 2-2 at the 61:47 mark.
From there, both teams locked up defensively. Both squads had their opportunities but many shots sailed wide of the goal until the game was sent to overtime. CSI had the only shot in the first overtime, but the game opened up in the second overtime, until Matthew Mbamelu headed in a shot from point-blank range on a crossing feed from Nkama. CSI was pleading for an offside's call to be made, but it was not to be, as CCNY clinched the win with just 5:02 remaining in the game.
CCNY led the final shot tally, 21-14 (13-6 on goal), and had 11 corner kicks to CSI's four.
CSI's next game will be played on Saturday, when they visit Lehman College for a 3pm contest at South Field in the Bronx, New York.
