The College of Staten Island women's basketball team ended their 2011-12 regular season on a down note, falling on the road to Farmingdale State College, 54-37, in Farmingdale, New York. The Rams improved to 14-8 overall in the win, while CSI fell for the second-straight outing, falling to 9-13 overall.
Junior guard Jeanette Zubizarreta hit five three-pointers tonight to lead the Rams, but it was CSI that took the lead early in the first and led until the 10-minute mark. Then Zubizarreta hit two straight three-pointers to give Farmingdale a 16-14 lead. The Rams held a 23-18 lead at the break and would shoot 48-percent in the second half to cruise to the victory. Zubizarreta finished with a game-high 15 points for the night.
The game marked Senior Night for a collection of Farmingdale seniors, including Natasha Smalls, who led the senior group with 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Junior forward Siohban Purvis scored 10 points and six rebounds in just 17 minutes played.
For Staten Island, junior guard Olivia Tierno had 12 points and four rebounds. Junior forward Katelyn Hepworth pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and added five points.
CSI will now next play on Sunday, February 19, to kick off the 47th annual CUNYAC / Con Edison Basketball Championships. CSI, the No. 5 seed in the tourney, will face No. 4 Lehman College at 7pm at Hostos Community College in the Bronx as part of quarterfinal play.
