Box Score The College of Staten Island men's soccer team fell for the first time this season today, falling 5-0 at the hands of visiting Wisconsin-Platteville as part of the 2012 Fall Classic at the CSI Soccer Complex. The win upped the Pioneers' overall mark to 2-0, while CSI leveled to 1-1.
In a see-saw first half, WPU took control at the 10:49 mark, making the most out of their counter-attacking style as Mbodje Sarr took a deflected pass at midfield and scampered to the CSI goal virtually unimpeded and lacing a shot passed CSI keeper
Daniel Raffo to take a quick, 1-0, lead. Shortly after, the Dolphins picked up their first shot on goal by
Giovanni Cortese, but little did they know it would be their last of the game, as the Pioneers defense clamped down and frustrated the Dolphins all afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Pioneers seemed content with playing the ball on the back line and sending their wings on long runs. After a series of near missed, the Pioneers struck again at 20:14 when a sparkling pass by Hunter McMahon found William Pretto right at the goal mouth, and the Pioneer powered it home to double up the lead. The 2-0 lead stuck until intermission, as WPU enjoyed a 9-4 advantage in shots (2-1 on goal).
With CSI needing to press, WPU added three counter-attacking goals in the second half, the first two by Mark Ciszewski. With the reserves shining, Austin Klemm added WPU's final goal at 84:07 to seal the game.
Ian Christensen (one save in 78:08) and Scott Sibik (11:52) combined for the shutout.
Stephen Caifa made three saves for the Dolphins in the second half, despite allowing three goals. CSI was out-shot, 17-6 for the game (8-1 on goal).
CSI will get back to action on Wednesday, September 5, when they travel to SUNY-Maritime for a 6pm non-conference contest.
