CSI WOMEN STAY UNBEATEN, TURN BACK CCNY, 2-1

Demi-Jean Martorano's fourth game-winning goal of the year fueled CSI over CCNY, 2-1
Box Score The College of Staten Island women's soccer team stayed unbeaten to start their 2013 campaign, running their overall record to 9-0-1 and CUNYAC mark to 4-0, via a 2-1 victory over defending-champion City College of New York in what was a rematch of last year's CUNYAC title game.  CCNY fell to 6-3 overall, and 2-1 in the CUNYAC.  The win was the 100th for CSI Head Coach John Guagliardo, who has been with the program since its inception in 2004.

Statistically, the Dolphins dominated the contest at Randall's Island from start to finish, starting with a 12-1 edge in shots taken in the first half, leading to a 1-0 CSI lead at intermission.  Melissa Gelardi ushered in the scoring just 8:13 into the game, burying a shot past CCNY keeper Nicole Carroll off of a right crossing pass by Samantha Wysokowski.  Play steadied from there, and although play was physical, both teams kept their poise.

In the second half, however, CSI took major control in the 49th minute, when Demi-Jean Martorano scored from short range after a beautiful centering pass from Danielle Alexandrini, who was able to shed her defender on the play.

With CSI dominating possession, they appeared in control, until a foul against CSI in the box awarded a penalty shot in CCNY's favor just five minutes later.  At 54:55, the Beavers' Yanique Newman calmly sank in the goal against CSI's Victoria Donegan, and all of the sudden CCNY was back in the game, 2-1.

From there, CSI got on the defensive, and the physical play ensued.  With 1:43 to play and CSI holding a 29-3 edge in shots, a series of yellow and red cards followed issued to both teams in the waning moments.  A red card and a pair of yellow cards (leading to a red) led to the ejection of a pair of CCNY coaches and two yellow cards in less than a minute on hard fouls by CSI's Deanna Kvetkoff led to her ejection as well, leading to a grand total of four yellow cards and a red card in the final 103 seconds of play.

CSI finished the game leading the shot count, 29-3 (10-2 on goal).  Donegan made a lone save to record the win while Carroll made six saves in defeat.  Wysokowski led all scorers with 10 shots taken, followed by Martorano's six.  CSI also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, travelling to Randall's Island for a date with John Jay College at 12 Noon.
