END OF THE ROAD FOR CSI WOMEN'S SOCCER WITH ECAC LOSS

Demi-Jean Marorano netted her 26th of the season but it wasn't enough
Box Score The College of Staten Island women's soccer program put forth a valiant effort, but it the end the St. Joseph's College of Long Island was victorious by a 2-1 count as part of ECAC Metro NY/NJ Postseason Tournament quarterfinal play in Patchogue.  The No. 4 seeded Eagles will move on to the semifinal round on Saturday, while the No. 5 Dolphins finalized their season at 16-3-2, their best overall mark in the program's 10-year history.

The Dolphins and Eagles had met during the regular season as well, in a game that resulted in a 0-0 tie.  St. Joe's controlled the tempo in that game despite the tie score and it would be the same this time as the temperature held just above the freezing mark at kick-off.

The Eagles got off to a 2-0 lead by intermission, using two goals in a span of under six minutes to break open the scoreless tie.  The Eagles did control play, however, right from the get-go.  SJC posted three shots in the opening 10 minutes, including a Katelyn Chiasera shot that rattled off of the post at 6:13.  Just over 15 minutes later, on SJC's eighth shot, yet another Chiasera shot hit the post.  A frustrated Eagles team did not get discouraged, and less than three minutes after hitting their second post, Jennifer Martino opened up the scoring by blasting a shot from the top of the goal box past an out-stretched Victoria Donegan to give the Eagles a one goal lead.

With momentum clearly having swung in SJC's favor, a reeling CSI gave up another goal just over five minutes later.  Martino struck again, this time taking a Jamieanne Eden pass for a breakaway and hammering the ball home to give SJC a 2-0 lead with 15:09 remaining in the first half.  CSI steadied defensively from there, but still, the Dolphins had only registered two shots in the first stanza, both going wide.

The Dolphins needed to find some offense, and did a better job of that in the second frame. A couple of attempts went wide to start the frame, until a Melissa Gelardi strike forced a Christiana Votta save in the 72nd minute.  Just over a couple of minutes later, CSI leading scorer and senior Demi-Jean Martorano got CSI on the board, receiving a Gelardi cross and burying a shot to make it a 2-1 game with 15:11 to play.

CSI played with urgency but the Eagles were up for the challenge, clamping down defensively and not allowing another shot, hanging on to the 2-1 win.  The Eagles enjoyed a 23-6 edge in shots (15-2 on goal), and earned seven corner kicks to CSI's one.  Donegan made 13 saves in defeat.

Martorano's goal was her 26th of the season, tying an all-time CSI single-season record with current teammate Samantha Wysokowski, set last year.  Martorano end her career with 85 career goals, CSI's and the CUNYAC's all-team leader in the category.

Despite the loss, CSI head coach John Guagliardo was quick to praise his team.  "Down 2-0 on the road and in the bitter cold, our team battled hard and I am very proud of them," he said.  "They never quit and represented themselves and the College well."

For the Dolphins, this was their fourth trip to the ECAC postseason, including their third straight.  The team is still looking for its first non-CUNYAC postseason victory, falling to 0-4 in quarterfinal play.  SJC improved to 5-1-1 all-time against the Dolphins.
