Box Score The College of Staten Island women's basketball squad celebrated a historical afternoon, visiting West Point, NY, for a non-conference test against NCAA Division I Army in hoops action this afternoon. The Dolphins battled valiantly but ultimately fell hard to the Black Knights, 108-64. CSI fell to 7-3 on the season, while Army improved to 8-3.
CSI hung tough in the opening stages, using an
Alyssa Carlsen jumper and a
Megan Myhre three-pointer to knot the score at 5-7 after the opening 2:32. Later, with 14:15 to go in the opening frame, a
Melanie Johnson three and a pair of
Lisa Galasso freebies cut the Black Knights' lead to 17-12. From there, however, Army took over, dialing up a 9-1 run, and after a Galasso made three-pointer, Army's Olivia Schretzman and Kelsey Minato guided an 18-5 run to open up a huge 47-21 Army lead with 6:45 to go in the frame.
Army led by as many as 37 points in the first half, before a modest 5-0 CSI run cut the halftime lead to 63-31 in favor of the Black Knights. A 9-0 run in the middle of the second half was the difference in what was a very even second half, one where CSI was outscored only by 12, 45-33.
Army's calling card on the afternoon was their domination on the glass, owning a 66-27 rebound advantage. The 66 rebounds allowed are the 11th highest in CSI single game history. Army also canned 31 of 40 free throws, more than doubling CSI's 14-22 mark. Army finished with six players in double figures, with Jen Hazlett leading the way with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Minato had 16 points and six assists, while Schretzman and Aimee Oertner tallied 12 each and Jordan Elliott and Danielle Failor finishing with 11 each off of the bench.
CSI was led by Myhre's 20 points, as the sophomore shot 4-10 from long range. Johnson finalized with 15 points, while
Lisa Galasso, finished with 14 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. In a bright spot for the Dolphins, CSI forced 16 Army turnovers, next to just 15 of their own.
CSI is now back in action on Friday, January 3. They will face Baruch College in a big CUNYAC match-up on the road for a 6pm start.
