Box Score The College of Staten Island women's basketball squad won for the sixth straight time tonight, using a steady defense and holding Brooklyn College to just 26.4% shooting in a 61-48 CUNYAC win played at Brooklyn this evening. The Dolphins improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-3, 0-1, respectively. The win broke a five-game road losing streak to Brooklyn, and marked the Dolphins' first win there since December 4, 2008.
Despite the final score, Brooklyn had their way early, building up an early 9-0 lead after the first three-plus minutes, powered by a pair of Megan Campbell inside drives. The Dolphins, however, did not panic, and turned the tide. CSI would score the next eight points, and a
Victoria Gallinaro drive at 11:08 would knot the score at 12-12. While the Bulldogs stayed mired in poor shooting Gallinaro gave CSi the lead on the next possession, canning a three to give CSI a 15-12 lead at the West Quad Center.
The game stayed neck-and-neck from there. Brooklyn wrestled away the lead with 3:33 to play, before CSI answered again with a mini six-point run, grabbing a four-point lead that they would eventually take into the locker room, 27-25.
After trading early second half baskets, CSI used
Nikki Fabozzi and
Megan Myhre baskets to open up a 36-29 lead just about four minutes into the second frame, and after BC cut the lead again to one, CSI pulled away again thanks to a Gallinaro three. Still, CSI never fully appeared in complete control until
Lisa Galasso buried a jumper to give CSI a 53-42 lead with 6:08 to go, completing a 10-2 run over five minutes as BC shot just 1-9 from the floor with five turnovers.
From there, CSI was able to keep BC at bay, holding fast to the lead and ultimately winning, 61-48. For CSI, it was the lowest point total they had allowed the Bulldogs since 2007, and lowest at Brooklyn since 2004.
CSI was led by
Melanie Johnson's 18 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Galasso's 13 points and Gallinaro's 10. CSI shot an ice-cold 3-25 from three-point range (12%). BC was paced by Carissa Williams' 12 points, while Campbell finalized with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
CSI is back in action on Tuesday, December 10, when they host Rutgers-Camden at the Sports & Recreation Center at 6pm as part of non-conferenve action.
