Box Score The College of Staten Island women's soccer team turned in their second win in under 24 hours, this time toppling visiting New Jersey City University by a 6-0 count earlier this morning at the CSI Soccer Complex as part of the 2nd Annual CSI Soccer Fall Classic. The Dolphins moved to 2-0 with the win while the Gothic Knights evened at 1-1 with the loss.
Against John Jay yesterday, it took CSI eight shots before one would land on goal. Today, CSI registered a lead it would never relinquish on just its second shot.
Demi-Jean Martorano netted her third goal of the season via a free quick from the lip of the goal box bending a ball over the wall and into the near post passed NJCU keeper Brittany Hoffman. Six minutes later, at 20:06,
Samantha Wysokowski netted her second marker, heading a
Danielle Smith chip pass into the box into the top shelf of the net to stake CSI to a 2-0 lead.
With NJCU reeling, CSI registered another counter-attacking goal just under four minutes later. This time Martorano struck again, converting on a
Danielle Alexandrini cross into a blast into the same left hand top corner. The Dolphins went into intermission up 3-0, and holding a 12-2 edge in shots (10-1 on goal), however, CSI did suffer a setback when first-year junior Smith had to be helped off of the field due to injury, not returning.
The break fueled CSI, as the Dolphins pounced on the Knights for two quick goals in the second frame, both by Wysokowski. First, at 47:58, Wysokowski fired in a line-drive after a no-look feed from Martorano, who was awarded a long through-ball from first-year junior
Megan Burke. Then, just 1:35 later, Wysokowski recieved another feed from Martorano, and slid passed a defender and punched it in from short range. Both goals came against NJCU's Cassie Lubonski, who replaced Hoffman at the half.
With time winding down, Martorano joined Wysokowski with a hat trick, completing a five-point afternoon. Martorano punched in a rebound after an initial crossing shot by
Senda Karagozler, who earned the assist.
CSI out-shot the Knights, 25-4 (19-2 on goal).
Victoria Donegan earned her second straight shutout for CSI, who got great defensive help from
Nicole Molinell and
Natalie Tombasco. Hoffman and Lubonski combined to make 13 saves for NJCU, as Wysokowski led the way with 9 shots (six on goal).
"This was a nice start to our season," said Head Coach
John Guagliardo, "but our thoughts are with Danielle (Smith). We got some great production from our top scorers today and that will open things up for our other players as well."
CSI is back in action on Wednesday. The team travels to Rutgers-Newark for a non-conference test at 4pm.
