STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The sun may have been shining, but it wasn't all sunny skies for the Dolphins as the College of Staten Island men's soccer team fell victim to Berkeley College - New York, 1-3, in a tough fought game at the CSI Soccer Complex, Tuesday.
The Knights set the pace from the start and wasted no time getting on the board as Dare Aniyikaye managed to steal the ball from a pod of Dolphins at midfield and made a fast break downfield to sneak a fast one past the goal keeper to give Berkeley a 1-0 lead just 3:25 into the game. Just 10 minutes later, the Knights scored again with a header by Mathias Valle, giving them a 2-point lead heading into the half.
Heading into the second half of play, the Dolphins looked refreshed as they challenged the defensive attack of the Knights. Senior
Mubaric Ibrahim was able to break through the Berkeley defenders and made a fast-break towards the goal and nailed a shot past the goal keeper at the 46-minute mark to put CSI on the board.
The heat and humidity on the field seemed to play a factor for the players as the head referee called for an unprecedented 'water break' due to the consistent cramping that was affecting athletes on both teams. After a 15-second break, action continued back on the field and soon after Berkeley scored the final goal of the game.
The CSI men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Rutgers-Newark. Kick-off for the game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
