Men's Basketball

CSI EXPLODES OFFENSIVELY TO OUST MEC, 113-79

Box Score In what was their highest point-total scored in over two decades, the College of Staten Island men's basketball squad scored early and often, coasting by the Medgar Evers College Cougars by a 113-79 count at the Cougar Cave in Brooklyn, NY, tonight as part of CUNYAC play.  The win, the 9th-straight for CSI, lifted the team to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the CUNYAC, while the Cougars dropped to 1-12, 0-6.

For the Dolphins, the 113 markers are the most since the team scored 117 in a win over American University in 1991, and were the most against the Cougars since a 115-68 win over the Cougars in 1987.  All told, it tied CSI's fifth-highest single-game point total in history, besting their mark of 109 points scored this year against Ramapo College.

The opening stages weren't easy.  After the game's first five minutes, MEC had a modest, 7-6, lead.  CSI scored a 9-0 run from there, powered by three Kevin King baskets to give CSI a 15-7 lead and from there, CSI never trailed.  A 16-5 run followed minutes later; as Bloochy Magloire gave CSI its biggest first half lead via a three, 35-16, with 9:50 to go.

MEC refused to go quietly, and a Valin Williams jumper pulled the Cougars back to just 51-43 with 3:08 left before CSI took a 59-46 lead into the locker room.

A three-point play by Javon Cox got CSI started in the second frame, and after the Cougars cut the lead down to 10, CSI made an important, 22-3 run over the next five minutes to make the score 90-61 with 9 minutes to play.  A pair of baskets each by Magloire and Dylan Bulger highlighted the run.  From there, victory was never in doubt, it was a question of how the Dolphins could continue to shoot and how many points they would ultimately score.

The Dolphins shot a robust 58.4%, a season high, and better than its 57.1% clip from the free-throw line (20-35), they out-rebounded Medgar, 47-43, and forced 21 turnovers, holding the Cougars to just 37% from the field.

Magloire led all scorers with 23 points, a season high, while Will Fonseca came off of the bench as well to dump 19 points and collect eight rebounds.  Cox finished with 13 points while King finished with 10.  Leading the way for the Cougars were Khalid Yousef and Williams, who both had 19 points.

CSI is back in action on Wednesday, January 15, when they host John Jay College, at 7:30pm, in a rematch of last year's CUNYAC Championship Final.
